08/23 — The Jets are in the process of completing a trade with the Washington Redskins for 12th-year-veteran guard Pete Kendall.
"We reached agreement in principle to trade Pete Kendall to the Redskins last night," said Jets head coach Eric Mangini in announcing the trade at his late morning news conference today. "Obviously each night Mike [Tannenbaum] and I meet, get together and discuss possibilities. When this deal presented itself, we thought it was a good opportunity." He said he expects the trade to be finalized today.
Mangini declined to disclose what the Jets will receive in compensation from the Redskins, their frequent trading partners lately, saying "We keep those things internal," but he stressed, "We were really comfortable with the value we got in the trade."
The coach said he met with Kendall on Wednesday night as the deal was coming together.
"I wished him well and he thanked me," Mangini said. "It was a really good, positive conversation. ... I've said a lot of times I did value the contributions Pete made. He did a lot of good work last year. Talking to him last night, I thanked him for those contributions and wished him well."
The trade puts the Jets' left guard position in the hands of Adrien Clarke, who started the first two preseason games; sixth-round rookie Jacob Bender, who has been getting reps with the first offense this week, and Wade Smith, who has played the position before.
"Guys have worked with the first group, the second group, inside, outside. That's a standard part of what we do. Just because that changes within a day or a few practices, there's no specific meaning there," Mangini said of Clarke's and Bender's time at the position. "We've played rookies on the offensive line, and rookies have come in and done a good job. It's not unique to the Jets or to my experience. I feel very comfortable with the depth we have there."
Kendall is now in position to move in at starting left guard on an O-line that already has Randy Thomas, a Jets starter from 1999-2002, starting at right guard.
Also listed on the Redskins' left guard depth chart are Todd Wade, the one-time Dolphins second-round pick, and Jason Fabini, a starting tackle on the Jets from 1998-2005. In fact, Fabini started at LT alongside Kendall in 17 of the Green & White's 18 games in 2004 and the first three games of '05. Having left the Cowboys for the Redskins, Fabini is now listed only as a guard.
Other former Jets on the 'Skins roster include WR Santana Moss, S Omar Stoutmire and LB Khary Campbell.
The Dolphins also had been rumored to be interested in Kendall. The Jets didn't trade him within the AFC East, but they did send him to a team they will face in Game 9 on Nov. 4 at the Meadowlands.
This is the third trade the Jets have executed with Washington since Tannenbaum became general manager. Last year the Jets acquired QB Patrick Ramsey for a sixth-round pick and on draft day they swapped their second-round pick, 35th overall, for the Redskins' second- and sixth-round picks in that draft and the 37th pick in the 2007 draft, which the Jets ultimately traded to the Bears to acquire RB Thomas Jones.
We'll have more on the Kendall trade and the reaction from the Jets players following today's closed practice that is scheduled to begin at 12:15 p.m.

Thu, August 23, 2007 - 12:32pm EST"Reports on 1050 ESPN are saying that the Jets got 4th and 5th rd picks in 09. If thats the case then Mr. T did an excellent job getting some value for Kendall then just releasing him and getting nothing. "

Thu, August 23, 2007 - 12:37pm EST"I hated it when Randy Thomas was traded and I don't like this trade either. Kendall had a lot to offer and they let him go the Redskins. The only thing I like about it is that on Nov. 4 we will see if this was the right thing to do. "

jet crash Said:
Thu, August 23, 2007 - 1:37pm EST"huge mistake. dont get how a starting guard, and a decent one at that, isnt worth a few more bucks to keep him happy, and if not, isnt worth more than a 4th round pick. Should have just kept hin as insurance if nothing else "
Double_A Said:
Thu, August 23, 2007 - 2:20pm EST"This move destabilizes the entire line. Kendall was the glue between the Brick and Gold. The whole offense will suffer and Chad will be running for his life. There is no depth now. No way can Clarke or Bender deal with quality tackles like Wilfork or Seymour. Bad decision."
Frank Said:
Thu, August 23, 2007 - 2:40pm EST"This is an absolute disaster! Tangini absolutely blew this one. Kendall was their best lineman, Captain and glue to the O-line. They should have resolved this issue several months ago. Ferguson is lost without Kendall just look at last weeks game with that childish round-robin at guard."
Howard Said:
Thu, August 23, 2007 - 3:10pm EST"Pete has recieved what he wanted........if we got a 4 for him, its a pretty good deal........but cant wait to kick his butt on nov.4th........everything should work out for everyone on this"

Thu, August 23, 2007 - 3:28pm EST"CHAD needs all the veteran protection he can get, but i do know a player who is unhappy can be a cancer on any team- great trade for the skins their o line is suspect."
Greensteel Said:
Thu, August 23, 2007 - 3:41pm EST"Kendall was a good LG, and he deserved better treatment than that!! The Jets were on the verge of a great year and this just cost them the season! No sixth rounder can replace him...prediction- Chad gets sacked and tears shoulder again! "
Mr. green T Said:
Thu, August 23, 2007 - 3:42pm EST"Jeff Fehr, He didn't take a pay cut last year. He restructured his contract, a front loaded one at that. Last year he got 5.7 million in his first year of his 4 year (ha!!) contract, so this year he would "only" make 1.7 mil. He took the money and ran. "
andy Said:
Thu, August 23, 2007 - 3:53pm EST"i trust we are doing the right thing. when the patriots cut Milloy that year everyone said that it was a major mistake. the pats got smoked on week 1, but ended up winnig it all...Pete was a good player, but we have to look at some of the younger guys as well."
Daniel Said:
Thu, August 23, 2007 - 4:07pm EST"We could have done with keeping him but to get a 4th round pick for a 34 year old guard is good business. What with last years 2nd round and now this the Redskins have ben very good to us. Come to think of it so have Tampa Bay (Mackey) and Chicago (Jones). Browning Nagle anyone? "
Andrew D Said:
Thu, August 23, 2007 - 4:19pm EST"Kendall's unahappiness made this deal necessary. If a guy doesn't want to play for you and still comes to practice he deserves the chance to be traded. Is it definate that it's a mid round pick?.....If so then I think they made a very good move. No one knew who Moore was. let's hope for a repeat"
JetsWin1 Said:
Thu, August 23, 2007 - 4:27pm EST"I've got mixed feelings on this one. We'll just have to put our faith in Mangini and Tannenbaum and trust they know what they're doing. Every move they have made thus far has worked out and I believe that they would not have done this if they did not feel we had someone capable to replace Kendall."
Boz Said:
Thu, August 23, 2007 - 4:45pm EST"I also have mixed feelings, If Pete Kendall said, the Jets would re-negoiate, and it was not true, he, should have been cut ,asap "
Frank Said:
Thu, August 23, 2007 - 4:51pm EST"Did you guys watch the game last week? In the first series with A. Clarke he missed a block that almost got Chad smoked and he failed to pull on the Washington screen. Bender is our new guard? Are you kidding? I guarantee you that the locker room is not happy about this. Kiss the season goodbye!"
Drew Said:
Thu, August 23, 2007 - 5:00pm EST"I see a veteran guard coming in the near future. Remember we got Kendall when he was cut by Arizona. Hopefully someone lets a decent OL go. I have little confidence in the 2 guys we have there now. Clarke&Bender are not ready for the big time yet. Randy anything new on J. Adruzzi? Is he still sick?"
JetsWin1 Said:
Thu, August 23, 2007 - 5:18pm EST"All of this jumping off a bridge due to the season is over has got to stop. We're not the "same old Jets" anymore and can actually expect good things to happen to our beloved Green & White. That's what the Tangini tag team has brought to us (building on what The Tuna began) and we have to trust it"
Damone Said:
Thu, August 23, 2007 - 5:25pm EST"Without a good offensive line ....Thomas Jones will just be another average NFL running back."
brian Said:
Thu, August 23, 2007 - 5:26pm EST"Get ready for Bender to prove all of the nay sayers wrong! This is the best thing that could have happened to the JETS. "
Coops Said:
Thu, August 23, 2007 - 5:34pm EST"Thanks goodness that is all over. Kendall was a good player, but the circus could no longer continue. Best for all concerned that he moved on. And, if the 4th round pick is true, then the Jets got good value in the trade. Now, as to the replacement...is Jeno James healthy and still available?"
Mr. green T Said:
Thu, August 23, 2007 - 5:48pm EST"Who's the San Fran OL guy i heard bandied about? I hear he's a disgruntled Guard or Tackle."
Ira Said:
Thu, August 23, 2007 - 6:18pm EST"We are now in the post Kendall era. Bender will be interesting to see how he plays vs the Giants. I say that the starting LG for this season is not on the roster yet. Unless Bender surprises me they p/u a vet. MR. T is too smart and had a plan before they made this move. GO JETS!!!!!!!!"
Andrew from Tucson Said:
Thu, August 23, 2007 - 7:12pm EST"Bye Bye cry baby! kendall showed his true colors by whining about money! work for my wage $15 per hour a while and you'd be happy to make 1.7 million. Good riddens Just remember what happenned to John Abraham when he cried about leaving. Hasn't played a full season yet! Karma will get you"
JayM Said:
Thu, August 23, 2007 - 8:13pm EST"When is anyone from the media going to report that Kendall made over $5 mil from the Jets for 1 year of work?"
Lomba Said:
Thu, August 23, 2007 - 9:24pm EST"Is Joe Andruzzi healthy enough to play another year? Better have some option, cause 2.5 mil for Kendall woulda been better than having Adrienne Clark pay us to start!"
Ira Said:
Thu, August 23, 2007 - 9:31pm EST"Some interesting names will get cut soon. Hollis Thomas is one. He played well last year for the Saints. Lennie Friedman is another player the Jets could trade for or hope the Browns cut him. He has been in the league for 8 years. He could come in and start or provide depth asap."
kelejets Said:
Thu, August 23, 2007 - 9:33pm EST"Kendall seemed to be not only a great asset, but a stand up person who I am sure had every reason to gripe if he didnt get what was promised. The Mangini error has done many good things but this was their first big mistake. Chad is fragile and the ground game will suffer. He should have been kept."
Peter Said:
Thu, August 23, 2007 - 11:35pm EST"The jets are satisfied with what they got in return for Kendall, but notice they are not telling us. My guess is that it was a fifth round pick at best. Howe is that a good deal for the Jets. Washington gets a solid starting offensive lineman for nothing. Are the Jets better today? NOT"
Peter A Said:
Thu, August 23, 2007 - 11:38pm EST"Great trade. The Jets are satisfied what they got in return. How about a sack of rotten potatoes. Probably a sixth round draft choice for a starting lineman. That stinks. Are the Jets better today than they were yesterday? Explain that to me please. "
Steve Said:
Fri, August 24, 2007 - 12:15am EST"The loss of Pete Kendall will haunt the Jets. Post this message in the Jets lockerroom. The health and success of Chad Pennington will be measured by his absence."
Todd Said:
Fri, August 24, 2007 - 1:29am EST"Another great move for Washington. Seems like Gang Green is the equivalent of a farm team for the Redskins lately. So long, Pete."

Fri, August 24, 2007 - 6:07am EST"with kendall gone,we better be able to run the ball this year, chad can't throw long or outside the hashs ,keep those powder puff throws out of the middle of the field"
Ira Said:
Fri, August 24, 2007 - 6:58am EST"I wanted Kendall to stay also. Too bad it came to this. Mr. T doesn't make moves without having an answer and they either beleive in Bender or have somebody in mind. He said yesterday "If not for the value he was going to still be here". So whoever that LG is they believe he will get the job done."
Bobby V Said:
Fri, August 24, 2007 - 7:44am EST"People underestimate the "O" line....they better get add'l help via trade or after player cuts...because Bender, Clarke, Smith are not the answer for this yr !"
frank s Said:
Fri, August 24, 2007 - 8:15am EST"Mike should be ashamed that he managed to screw up the Jets O line for what amounts to be very little. We lost a solid starter and a great teammate because Mike reneged on a promise. It certainly won't help our season & it may destroy it.."
PA-JETMAN Said:
Fri, August 24, 2007 - 8:34am EST"Why is it that a team will give gazillions in dollars to unproven rookies, but a leader and great palyer , which stabilized the entire line isn't worth a raise. This guy played his heart out , and it rubbed off on Mangold --I do not agree with this , b/c no one from prevoius drafts has stood out."
Dr. Frank Falcone, Jr. Said:
Fri, August 24, 2007 - 9:03am EST"Pete Kendall was a stand up guy with great character. You never had to worry about him doing his job on or off the field. He was also a good back up center. The Jets need to pick up a big name off the waiver wire, or make a trade because they need a leader on the O-line who will be dependable. "
Ira Said:
Fri, August 24, 2007 - 9:10am EST"Everybody is forgetting that the Jets were willing to trade Kendall before the draft. That tells you everything. Too bad it got so ugly. Mr. T got back good value for Kendall and they have or will get a replacement for him. They don't make moves without a plan."
Frank Said:
Fri, August 24, 2007 - 9:57am EST"The Tangini honeymoon is officially over. The arrogance displayed in the handling of Kendall is the negative side of the Belichick/Parcells pedigree. A great management team would have resolved this issue several months ago not on the eve of the 2007 season. This is a major black eye for them."
Frank Said:
Fri, August 24, 2007 - 11:41am EST"Lets face it ,you sign a contract,Then latter on you decide you need to change it.PLEASE another Keysau Jhonson. To G,M & coach good job you give to one you have to give to the rest. You sign a contract beacause you are happy with the deal.Good luck pete Hope you are happy with your contract now.."

Fri, August 24, 2007 - 12:53pm EST"The offensive and defensive line on a foootball team are of utmost importance. It is commonly said that the battles are won and lost in the trenches. This move is another in a long line of terrible decisions by the jets management. It leaves the o-line in shambles with no veterans and the d-line 2."

Double_A Said:
Fri, August 24, 2007 - 1:45pm EST"How about the petty way management treated him through training camp? No one here mentions the rookie dorm or playing him (out of position) in the second half with rookie free agents. Whether they meant to or not, it WAS embarrassing. Treat him w/respect and force him to play under contract."
Jetzman12 Said:
Fri, August 24, 2007 - 2:07pm EST"OK OK !! Kendall is now history..lets move on a make a play for Pittsburgh's Alan Faneca. He's expensive ,but getting him will solidify the line for at least 5 years. Note to Mangenius & Tannenbaum. Protect Chad at all costs!!!!!"
LifeLongJet Said:
Fri, August 24, 2007 - 3:54pm EST"I trust the Tanngini team enough to believe that they feel that the team has some acceptable alternatives at guard, but am curious as to what those alternatives are. I'd be lying if I didn't say that I was concerned."
Dan Said:
Sat, August 25, 2007 - 3:49pm EST"I don't see how any draft choice is worth the skill and expertise of Pete Kendall, and after seeing how his "replacements" played against the Vikings, I don't care how much he wanted, they should have given it to him. Clarke better play a lot better, because Chad's first int was HIS fault."

Thu, August 23, 2007 - 12:21pm EST"Randy, I hope Mr. T knows what he's doing on this one. I question if the trade weakens the depth on the O line. Mangini says he's comfortable there so I guess that's good enough for me."
