08/22 — And so Mangini Camp II came to an end this afternoon. Or did it?
"I don't really think it's over yet," said WR Laveranues Coles after he was the last Jet standing following a team autograph signing session that came after the Jets' final training camp practice at the Hofstra soccer stadium. "We might not be practicing out here, but trust me, behind those gates back there, it can get kind of rough."
True enough, beginning Thursday the Jets will begin practicing on their own fields behind their training complex. Practices will be closed to fans, and only the first 30 minutes will be open to reporters. So for the final 2½ hours of practice for public consumption — included in the observers was Mets GM Omar Minaya — the Jets aired the ball out.
The prettiest pass of another cool, gray, misty day was Kellen Clemens launching a deep ball for Justin McCareins. As Clemens heaved it, he was falling backward over FB Darian Barnes. But that didn't affect the accuracy as the ball hit McCareins in stride past CB Manny Collins for the score.
Chad Pennington had a number of strong completions as well. In 7-on-7 work, Pennington threw a couple of fine 30-yarders, to McCareins past CB Rayshaun Kizer and to Coles past CB Alphonso Hodge. Later in work against the scout team, No. 10 deftly stepped up to avoid the rush and got off a low comeback ball that Jerricho Cotchery made a tumbling catch on.
Even Brett Ratliff got in the act. QBing the scout team, the rookie found TE Jason Pociask, wearing the No. 80 jersey of Giants TE Jeremy Shockey on a pretty long ball that Pociask looked in over his shoulder.
Later in that period, Cody Spencer and David Bowens brought nice pressure on Ratliff around the ends.
The two-minute drill had a twist. This time the first offense took over with 2:22 to play, a 26-24 lead and three timeouts left. They went three-and-out and Ben Graham sent a long punt into the end zone for a touchback. Then the first offense took over again for the real two-minute work from their 20 with 2:02 left and no timeouts, needing a field goal for the win.
They never got it. Pennington led the offense to midfield before his sideline throw for McCareins was picked clean by CB David Barrett, who ran past players and the down-marker holder — then was jumped by safeties Kerry Rhodes and Erik Coleman in celebration as practice came to an end.
There was plenty of postpractice activity, besides the autographs for the nice-sized crowd of 1,575. On the turf field, Eric Mangini played with his two kids and Pennington with his two sons. To the side, four Jets — Cotchery, Rhodes, Leon Washington and Mike Nugent — took turns reading and muffing television promos along the lines of "You're watching the NFL on CBS-HD." Later, inside "the Weeb," occasional cheers could be heard from the meeting rooms.
The Jets were enjoying just a little freedom. Coles said this camp "is a testament to the guys. If anybody can make it through this, I pretty much feel they'll make it through anything." They made it through. Now on the other side, all that awaits them are those gates L.C. referred to, the Giants and Eagles and then the regular season.

Very fitting that Barrett ends camp with an INT. McCareins continues to shine and is the most impoved player on this team. Now the real fun starts. GO JETS!!!"

Not surprisingly, long past most of the players left the field, Lavernous remained to sign for those who remained. My hat off to you Mr. Coles"

Wed, August 22, 2007 - 7:44pm EDT"Congrats to Randy completing his first training camp at the website. Your work has brought all of us Jet fans together for a fun summer. It was great battling our "Captain" Ira on the Revis deal... and yes Ira, Barrett has looked good this summer but he will break our heart...Here's to all Jat fans"

After the game verse the Vikes, I didn't want to hear the last throw of camp was another INT by Chad. During a two minute drill none the less. NO INT problems this year Please."

I am a little concerned on the number of picks our quarterbacks are throwing but hopefully after we get serious about establishing the run that should take some of the predictability out. Any sign of J. Miller and how did Revis do?Go Jets!!!"

Thu, August 23, 2007 - 7:02am EDT"Well i thought Bender played well vs the Vikes. Reports are they have traded Kendall. Not happy about this move. Hope they're correct about this. They've said the best players will play since they took over. Well at LG do we now have the best? Will see how it plays out. I do have have concern. "

Drew Said:
Thu, August 23, 2007 - 10:07am EDT"Will have to disagree with the Jets trading Kendall. He is by far the LG we have. Unless they got a 3rd round pick this was a big loss for Jets managment. Are we better today than without Kendall? I think we all know the answer... I am pretty upset how this was handeled...a little immature maybe??"

Ira Said:
Thu, August 23, 2007 - 10:57am EDT"I heard Mr. T on with Buttle and i thought he said he would trade within the division if both teams benefited. The Dolphins would love to have Kendall. That would be a shock. The Chiefs and the Rams both need a guard. Those teams would be my quess. Maybe they can get a 4th or 5th rd pick."
Michael S. Said:
Thu, August 23, 2007 - 11:25am EDT"I think Bender will step up, just because he did not come from USC or Miami does not mean he does not have the potential to be a great offensive player. I think Bender will silence a lot of critics."
Ira Said:
Thu, August 23, 2007 - 11:41am EDT"If the reports out of DC are correct then a #4 for Kendall is a good deal considering the mess this was. Mr. T got back that 4th rd pick they gave up for Barlow. D.Synder sure seems to love Jets players. Fabini,Thomas,Moss, and Kendall are all on the Skins now. Lets hope Bender plays well this week."

Thu, August 23, 2007 - 12:09pm EDT"If the jets really wanted to keep Kendal then they would have, obviously mangini felt it was better to get him out.He sees and knows alot more than we do.Other than Shnagel and Barlow,he has been perfect, every player contributes in some way.Bradway also picks great talent, problem was HERM was coachin"
Frank Said:
Thu, August 23, 2007 - 2:57pm EDT"Has anyone seen Norm Katnick? Way to go guys A. Clarke is a disaster missed blocks and assignments during last weeks chilish game of round robin. This is going to seriously damage the season. Just look at the beginning of last year when Kendall was hurt. I guarantee to you the lockeroom is not happy"

Randy Lange Said:
Sat, August 25, 2007 - 12:08pm EDT"Jet Granny, George Sauer was a fine WR as well and formed a formidable tandem with Don Maynard, but Sauer didn't join the Jets until 1965."

If this team can stay healthy for a 2nd year in a row (maybe too much to ask), there is no reason why we cannot challenge for the division. Sept. 9 cannot come soon enough!!!!!!"
