File Under: Oakland Raiders, Community Soup Kitchen, Mark Sanchez, hot dogs, hamburgers

10/28 — After enjoying one highly publicized hot dog last Sunday, Jets rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez has purchased 500 hot dogs and 500 hamburgers, along with buns and rolls, through A&P to donate to the Community Soup Kitchen of Morristown.

The CBS television cameras caught Sanchez eating a hot dog on the bench late in the fourth quarter of the Jets’ 38-0 win over the Raiders at the Oakland Coliseum. Despite running for his second career touchdown and throwing for another TD while playing turnover-free football, Sanchez did not feel well before or during the game and somehow got a hot dog down on the sideline.

"Something happened here and I wanted to turn it into a positive," Sanchez said late this afternoon at his midweek news conference. "We tried to figure out something we could do, and through A&P we bought the hot dogs and donated them to the Morristown Soup Kitchen. They really appreciated it and expressed their gratitude. It was great."

Hungry for a win after a three-game losing streak, Sanchez and the Jets got one in impressive fashion. Now just a few days later, the rookie is going to help out many needy people off the gridiron.

The Community Soup Kitchen of Morristown and Outreach Center serves a hot, nutritious noon-time meal, 365 days a year, to anyone who comes through its doors. The meal usually consists of soup, entree, vegetables, salad, bread, fruit, dessert and beverage. In addition, the center also offers a take-home table at which canned goods, fresh fruits and vegetables, and bag lunches and breakfasts are available.

The Community Soup Kitchen of Morristown lists the following as current needs:

■ Coffee

■ Margarine, large tubs

■ Small and large canned fruit

■ Hearty Meals in a Can

■ White T-shirts, sizes L, XL, XXL

■ Men's underwear, sizes 34/36, 38/40

"sanchez just shows his high maturity. i agree that sneaking a snack shouldn't be a bad thing. the man was hungry and didn't eat. if i was playing on the field with an empty stomach i'd be hungaring for something to snack too. at least he tried to be discrete about it. rather then take a snap on the field eatting the hotdog. lol. Sanchez just shows the maturity and thre role model figure."

"There is such a need for donations, both food and money to keep places like the soup kitchen going. How neat would it be if the Jets had a fundraiser at one of its home games to donate to the soup kitchen. They are getting a lot of good press on their donation but they could do so much more that donating hotdogs."

"I'm old enough to remember stories of Bobby Lane supposedly having a flask stashed on the bench. A hot dog? Give me a break."
