File Under: Miami Dolphins, Calvin Pace, Oakland Raiders, rushing offense

10/27 — I just love saying "We're No. 1." And so this morning it's my pleasure to confirm that the Jets are the NFL's No. 1 rushing offense for the first time since 2004 and for only the sixth week since 1995.

As I mentioned in the last few days, it would've taken a 702-yard rushing game by the Redskins on Monday night to top the Jets for the most rushing yards per game. The 'Skins managed 62 yards against the Eagles, so the Jets officially have unseated the Dolphins — who conveniently come in for the Jets' next game Sunday at the Meadowlands — as the top rush dogs in the league.

What does it all mean? Obviously not much. A No. 1 ranking at any time won't get you a Super Bowl berth or even a first-round bye.

But it is something to talk about between games, and the players definitely are interested. Offensive linemen, who continue to be underappreciated and under-reported-on league-wide, often measure their efforts by the backs and the ground game they block for. It can help everyone involved focus on the task at hand, which is the accuumulation of victories, by doing something to help achieve that goal at state-of-the-art levels.

Something else of interest: If the Jets continue to run the ball at their current rate, they would break several franchise records and even come close to some NFL marks. Here is how the Jets would stack up if they can maintain their seven-game pace:

 Category    Atts     Yards  Yds/Att    TDs
 After 7 Games 255 1,294 5.1 11
 16-Game Projection 583 2,958 5.1 25
 Jets Franchise Record 571 2,646 4.7 23
 NFL Record 681 3,165 5.7

And we have a few more Tuesday notes and charts of the last-two-decades variety from Sunday's game.

Long Field for Opponents

The Raiders' average start on their 10 drives on Sunday was their 18.1-yard line. That was the worst drive start by a Jets opponent in 20 seasons. Here are the five worst opponent drive starts since 1990 (home teams in CAPS):

 Year,Gm Final Score Drives AvgStart
 1990-8 Jets 17, HOUSTON OILERS 12 9 17.0
 2009-9 Jets 38, OAKLAND 0 10 18.1
 2003-2 Miami 21, JETS 10 9 19.6
 1991-8 Jets 17, INDIANAPOLIS 6 7 19.9
 2003-4 Dallas 17, JETS 6 10 20.0

Pace Power

Calvin Pace forced two fumbles by Raiders QBs in the pocket that the Jets recovered Sunday. Since 1990, Pace is only the fourth Jet to execute two strip sacks that resulted in Jets fumble recoveries in the same game. All have occurred since 2005. Here are the four, along with the number of points scored off of the strip sack recoveries:

Year,Gm Opp Jets Defender Opposing QB Strips-Pts
2005-13 vs. OAK DE John Abraham Marques Tuiasosopo 2-10
 2006-3 at BUF S Kerry Rhodes J.P. Losman 2-7
2008-4 vs. ARZ LB David Bowens Kurt Warner 2-11
2009-7 at OAK LB Calvin Pace J.Russell/B.Gradkowski 2-14

First-Quarter Three-Peat

The Jets' three first-quarter takeaways at Oaktown (Marques Douglas' fumble recovery of Pace's strip sack and INTs by Jim Leonhard and Darrelle Revis) marked the fourth time in the past 20 seasons that the Green & White notched three first-quarter takes in a game (home team in CAPs):

 Year,Gm Final Score 1st-Qtr Score INTs-FRs
 1995-12 Jets 16, SEATTLE 10 Jets, 7-0 1-2
 1996-10 New England 31, JETS 27 Jets, 7-0 2-1
 2001-4 Jets 42, BUFFALO 36 Jets, 21-6 1-2
 2009-7 Jets 38, OAKLAND 0 Jets, 14-0 2-1

"Pick up the phone and do some DUE DILIGENCE and get Larry Johnson out of there. His whole career has been wasted. We need a big, bruising running back. "

"LJ? This grabbing of vets instantly without trying your own guys always amazes me, maybe it's a disease of Yankee fans. TJ and SG handling most of the runs with Wood in a Leon role and TRich carrying once in awhile sounds great, why don't we just see how that works out? KWjetfan, Leon could've signed quickly for less than he wanted but MUCH more than he was getting but chose not to, unfortunately."
