10/24 — With the Jets short on wide receivers, Danny Woodhead was elevated from the practice squad and joined the active roster last week. Although he didn’t play at WR week against Buffalo, he did appear on special teams and he is expected to play on special teams again this week at Oakland.
“Anytime you get a chance to play it’s exciting and you just have to seize the opportunity,” the new No. 83 told newyorkjets.com. “I’m not changing anything. I’m going to continue to do the same thing each week.”
The 5'9", 195-pounder works hard and has great speed, and his blocking ability showed improvement in training camp.
The Jets special teams will need all the help they can get while playing against one of the NFL's best kicking and punting units in the Raiders.
“They have a real weapon in [Shane] Lechler,” said coordinator Mike Westhoff. “They’ve got the best gross and the best net. He blasts the ball. They get stuck and he comes in and 'boom,' keeps them in the game.
"And [Sebastian] Janikowski has been a real good kicker for them, too. You don’t know what he’s going to do. He might hit it out of the stadium.”
Woodhead said the two kickers “are phenomenal at what they do and we as a group will have to do some things to try and distract them and help the return game. We know they’re going to come out and boom the ball. We’re just going to go out and try and break one.”
Lechler and the punt coverage team's league-leading averages are 52.1 in gross punting and 44.1 in net. Janikowski, in his 10th season, can still put his kickoffs deep in the end zone, although so far this season he's had only six touchbacks and the Raiders' kick coverage is 29th in kickoff yardage allowed (26.5) and in average start after kickoffs (29.1).
With Leon Washington handling kickoff returns, the Jets are 16th in the league with 22.7 yards per return. With Jim Leonhard having done most of the punt returns, the Green & White are 11th with 9.3 yards per return.
“It’s frustrating for me because I’m used to really smoking it,” said Westhoff. “I expect to be better. Yet there are times when we haven’t had the opportunity. We’re so close and then we’ve had a couple of adjustments where we’ve had to put new guys in different spots and they’ve made a mistake here and there.”
But Woodhead doesn’t plan on being that new guy to make the mistake this week.
“I’m going to do whatever’s asked of me, go out there and work as hard as I can and we’ll see what happens,” he said. “I’m not going to try and do anything more than I should do. I’m going to stick with my responsibilities.”

Randy Lange Said:
"jet80, we don't know yet about how they'll be used, but Donald Strickland was at nickel before he got hurt and Dwight Lowery has been playing RCB for Lito Sheppard so my guess is Strickland back at nickel."

And what about WW, who looked so good this summer with MS and more than deserves some WR play? My buddy from Brooklyn who's been a Jets fan as long as me always says his biggest gripes with the team are management and the use of players, and when I see what we've done with Henry and Ainge..."

Sat, October 24, 2009 - 7:47pm ET"Strickland was excellent at nickel before he got hurt. Its a shame about Lito but Lowery has played well and can start with no problem. He always finds a way to get the ball. I expect Leon to finally break a big return tomorrow. And i wouldn't be surprised if Leon and LeonHard are both back at the same time for a few. Everybody enjoy the game and watch the Jets get back on track. GO JETS!!!!"

I'm glad they moved woodhead to WR i think anyway they can get him on the field he and washington will be unstoppable. Opposing D's won't know what to do."

The speed of those two would create serious miss-matches w/ the D! Hope he can get at least 1 touch on offense. If I don't see any screens to Leon or anyone else I'm going to go crazy-what happened to those?? How about some delayed runs too!"
