10/21 — It was one of those happy coincidences. Rex Ryan was a few minutes into his news conference today and was answering a question about any concerns he might have about quarterback Mark Sanchez's emotions.
"That's the beauty of him," the Jets head coach replied. "I want him to be himself, and he's Cool Hand Luke, he normally is. Now that thing right there, you throw five interceptions in a game, I think all of us would be affected.
"But he was ready to go. He never wavered. He just knew he was going to lead his team down the field and we were going to kick the field goal to win the game. And I don't think one guy on our team didn't believe him.
"So that's where I think we got the right guy."
Just as Rex was saying that, Sanchez, one of the last players still on the practice field, was wrapping up some extracurricular work with his wide receivers and was ready to jog in. But as usual, he stopped for a game of "Crossbar."
He and his fellow QBs (and a few other players up for the challenge) played this during training camp and come back to it after practices now: Who can hit the crossbar with a thrown football from 20, 25, 30 yards away? It's more like a game of ring toss on the boardwalk or a fan field goal challenge at halftime. Even for pro QBs, this is a hard thing to do.
Sanchez was playing crossbar solitaire today. He picked up one football and let it fly from 40 yards, maybe 45. Ping! Dead-center off the bar.
The rookie QB normally talks with reporters today and he will still do that, but he couldn't fill his normal slot in front of his locker during media availability because things were running late and he had a meeting to attend. But Sanchez's interview with reporters will be held in the media room today at 5 p.m., with the session set to be streamed live on newyorkjets.com and archived as soon as possible so that if you don't catch it live, you can hear it at your leisure.
Of course, you come to expect the opponents to turn on the smoke machine about the QB they'll be facing on Sunday, no matter how many picks they threw the week before. But Raiders coach Tom Cable, a no-nonsense guy, sounded sincere in his simple assessment of Sanchez on his conference call with Jets reporters earlier today.
"I expect to see the player I saw earlier in the year, a guy that’s in control," Cable said. "The big key for him is that they run the ball so darn well, so I’m sure they’ll try to play off that. He’ll bounce back. He’s a good player.
Green & White's Health
Ryan's early injury report had some interesting caveats. For instance, the Jets are listing four players as "Did Not Participate" in today's practice — WRs Jerricho Cotchery (hamstring) and Brad Smith (quadriceps), CB Lito Sheppard (quad) and T Damien Woody (knee/foot).
But Rex said although Cotchery and Smith didn't work during team drills, which is what the DNP classification means, "They did do some individual things, so hopefully they'll be ready to roll."
The Jets are also listing WR Braylon Edwards (quadriceps), as limited, but the coach's take is "I think he's going to be fine for the game."
Woody continues to rest during the week and start and play well on gamedays. As he said after Sunday's Bills game, "I'll be fine. It's OK. That's part of the game, man, just deal with it."
Sheppard is another story. Ryan, asked if his corner had a setback vs. Buffalo, said, "Yeah, he did. It's maybe not quite as bad [as it was in previous weeks] but I don't feel real confident he'll be playing this week."
Rex Cetera
Ryan said of today's practice: "I felt our team was a little off today. Something wasn't just clicking or whatever. I mentioned that to them. ... I just felt it was a little off and I can't put my finger on why." He said it was not an energy issue.
Asked if Kellen Clemens will get any first-team reps this week, he said no more than usual. "Sometimes the ones are up, sometimes the twos are up," he explained. "He does get reps during the week, but the majority of the reps won't change. Mark will be getting the majority of the reps."
Ryan, told that DE Richard Seymour, once a Patriot and now a Raider, said he expects all the Sanchez talk this week means the Jets will run the ball like crazy, agreed. In fact, the Jets coach gave out the game plan (or a greatly modified version of the game plan) for Oakland: "It's no surprise. We're going to run and play-action. That's our game plan. They know it. And that's their game plan against us, too."

I don't think I've seen as many passes -- and dumb, horizontal passes -- on 3rd and 1/3rd and 2 by any Jet team ever. Sometimes we look AFRAID to run! And MS would sure do better if the running was consistent, we had some success along those lines in the 1st 3 games."

Wed, October 21, 2009 - 5:40pm ET"I have believed since day 1 this was the wrong pick. Sanchez never had an arm coming out of college. He played in perfect conditions at USC. You can't make up for lack of arm strength playing in the meadowlands. Of course now he gets to go to Oakland, and will probably play well, and everyone will be acting like he is the greatest again. He will not be able to win at home in Nov/Dec. "

Wed, October 21, 2009 - 6:00pm ET"I think it is obvious what the Jets need to do in Oakland to get a win, however, I think Kirwin on sirius NFL radio made a great point, sure you need to scale the offense down a little to help the rookie, but you don't need to advertise it so loosely, otherwise it becomes, Advantage opposing Defense. But then again, maybe Rex has something different up his sleeve for the Radas. I hope so."
scjoe Said:
Wed, October 21, 2009 - 6:06pm ET"In regard to Rex's decision to leave Murral and Dig behind this week, I think it is wrong. If you are going to do that then you have to leave Hartsock, Brick, and all of the others who cost us any chance of winning that game with all of those foolish penalties. I think, far and away, the one by Hartsock in the OT was the most critical."
Puck Said:
Wed, October 21, 2009 - 6:25pm ET"i agree with BriGuyinFL, sanchez is our qb and he'll wind up being a GREAT one but shotty is out of his mind, he does some really dumb dink and dump plays and seems to stray away from teh teams strengths which are running the ball and stretching the field with edwards cotchery and clowney, shotty needs to get back to basics and abandon all of his passive play calling tendencies"
Row Said:
Wed, October 21, 2009 - 7:39pm ET"We have to win this game. I don't care how many times he can hit a cross bar, I want him to step up and make an NFL throw. He didn't look "like a rookie" on Sunday. He looked like someone who had never even ran the Jet offense. If he looks the same, we have to make a move. We must win, that's what Rex gets paid to do. What was everyone else doing in practice when he was hitting the cross bar?"

At Raiders I even expect more interceptions.. its black hole you know, and Sanchez will not handle the pressure. bench him before its too late! Go jets!!"

Wed, October 21, 2009 - 8:35pm ET"@scjoe, your right about the crucial penalty Hartsock made but everyone makes mistakes, and have their share of struggles. And for anyone who has doubts about Sanchez read my comment last blog. As Randy supplied Eli's early years from '04 to end of '07 season (30-27 record; 72.9 pass rating) '07 playoffs to now (21-6; 89.5 pass rating) give Sanchez a change to get use to the Meadows (cold weather)"

Wed, October 21, 2009 - 9:40pm ET"Great article, Randy! As regards the occurence this season of 3 wins and then 3 losses, I think that when you have a rookie QB: Defenses charge him to shake up his confidence. And with the West Coast Offense and the short throws, Defenses will hold in the corners and safties, so you need to go beyond the Offense that helped Chad so much and put in some long throws to Clowney, etc. Go Jets! "
MIKE Said:
Wed, October 21, 2009 - 11:19pm ET"Get off Mark's back. Our pass rush is our biggest issue. We've blitzed more than any team and yet we have the fewest sacks. There's a red flag if I've ever seen one. Our LB's definatlely have pass rushing skills but none of them are a real threat, and certainly not for the oppostion to worry about. Pace is the most overated LB out there. I think he is a solid player but know more than 8 sacks."
Jeremy Said:
Thu, October 22, 2009 - 12:39am ET"My guess is that Sanchez was able to hit the crossbar b/c 1 nobody was rushing him 2 it wasn't cold 3 it wasn't windy 4 most importantly, it doesn't matter! Practice reading defenses on the spot and practice your timing routes w/ BE & whoever is healthy i.e. Keller! Randy, any stats on teams with horrible sack #'s actually making the playoffs?? Very curious consider the JETS are tied for last!"

Thu, October 22, 2009 - 12:48am ET"Only problem with Sanchez is his maturity. You can tell he came out early and lack of game experience when he's NOT doing well. When he quits trying so hard and relaxes he will be fine. This is just one problem with starting a rookie, but I still say he's the right choice. Besides, there's other things to worry about like injuries."
Joe T Said:
Thu, October 22, 2009 - 6:58am ET"If you don't let Sanchez play this year, and at least the next three, then why did we draft him. he's a franchise qb and will be a good one. If you don't the Jets will be doing this next year. Hey who knows Jets can still make the playoffs. So wipe your tears."
Ira Said:
Thu, October 22, 2009 - 7:09am ET"scjoe, I agree with Rex's decision with Digs and Murrell. That was just plain stupid and you can't have that. Hartstock was a mistake when he was trying to make a play. There is a big difference bewteen the two. BriGuyinFl, I agree with you about Sanchez. Lets be honest though if he does struggle again and they need a lift you bring in a KC to get the win. Then Sanchez starts again next game."
T-Bone Said:
Thu, October 22, 2009 - 7:51am ET"I love all the people who say bench Sanchez. Sorry, Clemens isn't the answer either. The 3-0 start was the worst thing that could have happened to the Jets. He is a ROOKIE. Calm down, let him play and learn, and enjoy a 8 - 8 season. We get a few more pieces on defense, Shonne Greene emerges next year, Sanchez is beastly and we take the AFC East."
Schuyler Said:
Thu, October 22, 2009 - 8:20am ET"What are you guys talking about? He doesn't have an arm? Did you read the article? Or watch Sunday's game? The guy has an arm, he's just making the wrong reads. He's six games into his NFL career, to say that he was the wrong pick is ludicrous. He's learning on the fly, without a veteran helping him. It usually takes 4 seasons for a qb to slow down the game, you can't judge him after 6 games."
Andrew Said:
Thu, October 22, 2009 - 8:35am ET"Chris, 6 games into his NFL career you can't say he's a disaster. 2nd, you don't bench Sanchez who is learning the position on the pro level. Terry Bradshaw almost get ran out Pittsburgh for dismal performances when he started and we all know after that he got 4 superbowl rings. This is very common for a rookie QB, stay patient and let the kid develop from his experiences. Thats the only way. "
Frank Said:
Thu, October 22, 2009 - 8:46am ET"You are right Row Sanchez threw up a couple of ducks that were worse than anything Pennigton put up it was embarrassing. Thats great so he is hitting cross bars but he couldn't complete a 10 yard pass on Sunday. Blaming it on the coaching staff is ridiculous Shotty wasn't throwing the ball. You can blame the coaching staff for letting him check off at the line of scrimmage which he has done poorly"
jetfan66 Said:
Thu, October 22, 2009 - 8:47am ET"Schottenheimer needs to be on the hot seat not Sanchez.. Lets mix some short game in with the deep horizontal and maybe we can get opportunities. If I know what we are going to do on a play, don't you think the Pro D coordinators know also!"
Frank Said:
Thu, October 22, 2009 - 8:48am ET"You can also blame the coaching staff for poor time management and play calling at the end of the half in trying to get off the field goal Feely missed. If Sanchez lays another egg this weekend it will be time for him to sit. Hopefully he will become enlightened and make better decisions with the football."

Thu, October 22, 2009 - 9:35am ET"This team is much like the Ravens of 8-9 years ago. They dont have much of an offense but their defense will keep you in the game and even win it for you as long the QB doesnt score for the other team. They need to run the ball and have more screens to Leon and Jones. When the other team stacks the line then you take shots downfield. Sanchez shouldnt be asked to do too much as he is just a rookie."
Scjoe Said:
Thu, October 22, 2009 - 10:05am ET"Your kidding me right. Murrell and Dig punched a guy in the face . I thought it was great but its not right. And as for all you Sanchez haters. Peyton Manning, Joe Montana, John Elway. Its called Development."

So they go out to Oak the following week and Hall kicks them into the playoffs. Why not look at this game as a win will get them going in the right direction again? I really do believe Mark gets back on track with a scaled back gameplan. Ground and pound! GO JETS!!!!"

Thu, October 22, 2009 - 10:57am ET"Please stop talking about benching MS-if he is the QB of the future let him ride out this season. Look at some of the most successful QB's: Peyton Manning went 3-13 his first year, Jim Kelly 4-12, Steve Young 2-12, Troy Aikmen 0-11. Leave him in- next year he will have paid his dues and he will have confidence. He has shown he can be great. Let's think about the future, so we can win regularly"

Thu, October 22, 2009 - 11:13am ET"Anonymous is right. The Jets need to take advantage of the aggressive Defense with Screen pass plays. To Leon , to Jones, Even screens to the tight end Keller, and throw in some quick tunnel screens to wide outs Edwards , and the Clown."
Vaughn Said:
Thu, October 22, 2009 - 11:17am ET"Sanchez is the real deal. He has an arm and he has the ability. You need to give him some time and be patient. Peyton Manning was garbage his first year with the Colts. Don't be so hard on a talented rookie QB, otherwise you'll end up with a 40 year QB drought like the one the Jets have been in. Schottenheimer should be on the hot seat if anyone, 3 different QB's have had trouble in his system."

If we're going to pass let's do some flood outs, some goal line tight end . screens , quick outs to Braylon , quick slant pass middle. Bread and butter plays that will build drives with timing. He can get in the zone."

Anyway, Ira, with all due respect, my contention is, and always was, that winning is the bottom line, and in that game quite a few of those 14 penalties could have been prevented and gave us a better chance to win, I only referred to the most obvious one in the ot. "
scjoe Said:
Thu, October 22, 2009 - 11:49am ET"On Sanchez, I believe he has some issues and some learning curves, but I really don't believe that arm strength is one of them. I am not saying he has a rocket, I am saying he can make all the throws, and in time he will adjust to the winds of the Meadowlands. Now, the question becomes, how much time, and at what cost. Going in to the bye at 3-5 would be costly, with a five game losing streak."

He will somehow figure this out. Get the swagger back this week."

I wish he would look at some of the Elite Qb's in the league like Manning And Brees and see what they do the second they come off the field. They go right to analyzing the pics and make their adjustments.I like the kid and think he is special but it's these minor things that seperate the men from the boys. Study Study Study !!"

Thu, October 22, 2009 - 1:13pm ET"I don't think we should be benching Sanchez for any future games, however I also would not have minded if we put in KC against the Bills. When MS throws 4, 5 picks and we are still in a position to win, why not throw in KC to provide a spark to get a win. Right after the game Rex could declare to the media MS is our guy moving forward, end of story and we get a win."

Thu, October 22, 2009 - 1:26pm ET"With the exception of a few fans that post on this blog, I've been a fan since Joe Willie came to the Jets. I've been through all the up and downs, but still love this team. It amazes me to see how impatient some fans are with MS. He's a rookie and has had some good games and bad, just like any other QB. To judge him on 6 games is ridiculous. Instead of being so critical, try supporting him. "
Steve Said:
Thu, October 22, 2009 - 1:31pm ET"To say he doesn't have good arm strength is also crazy. Look at how accurate he's been when throwing long down field. All I'm saying is give the guy the shot he deserves and stop being so down on him."

And wouldn't you agree it is the responsibility of the coach to put the player in the best position to succeed? So when he sees his rookie qb out there struggling with the weather conditions, he hopefully could see he had lost his...."

I don't think anyone at this point is saying the season is lost however this is a veteran playoff caliber team to just throw that away so the kid can cut his teeth is ludicrous. You play to win and put your best players on the field if the QB is ranked 34 out of 36 and leading in turnovers you do something about it!"

Thu, October 22, 2009 - 4:41pm ET"Suddenly most everyone realizes that you can't expect miracles from a rookie QB's first 6 games, which is good. Still, no team that's still sorting out its WRs, still adjusting on both O and D, and has 5 sacks in 6 games is that strongly playoff caliber, though I like where we're headed. And what's this fantasy that KC, of all people, could ever come off the bench 6 games in and play like a star? "

Fri, October 23, 2009 - 8:59am ET"KC wouldn't have to play like a star, just not turn the ball over 12 times in 6 games. You have to send the message that we are about winning over everything. No one scolded Sanchez when he got fined for those "blocks". I just think we can't sacrifice the team for one man's accomplishments. (Favre) I see this week as pivotal. Dolphins are going to get a win. We MUST win! Go Jets"

Fri, October 23, 2009 - 4:22pm ET"I just praised you on AA in another story, Row, but I can't go along on KC. MS is gonna have his awful games just like KC had his 3 years ago. I don't see any reason to give KC the reins now by default, he's not the guy we're gonna be going with in the future no matter how well he does here or there. I'd much rather groom EA as the serious competition for MS, he's got it all over KC in my view."

I feel with all Young rookie QB too much is expected in their first years and thats unrealistic. "

I'm not an MS hater or lover; I love the team & want them to play well &, hopefully, win. I can handle a loss if we play well. If MS is playing as poorly in 4th Q vs Raiders, I would hope he gets benched for the rest of the game. Any chance that EA will replace KC as 2nd string QB? can depth chart change?"
