10/19 — We went into detail in another story today about Kris Jenkins' season-ending knee injury. Rex Ryan spoke about how hard it will be to replace Big Jenks in the lineup this season. But he didn't open his news conference with other matters from Sunday's game besides the Jenkins injury, which he waited to address until a reporter asked him about it four questions in.
The hot topic, which Rex jumped right into, is Mark Sanchez and the offense and what the Jets do moving forward.
"I just think we've got to do a great job of what we're asking this young man to do," Ryan said. "Do we need to cut things back, things that we could put on somebody else's plate and take some things off his plate? ... You've got to look at everything. We're still going to be true to ourselves offensively, but is there something we can help him with? That's the challenge we have going forward with our offensive staff."
This didn't mean any lessening of confidence in Sanchez, despite the five interceptions he threw against the Bills in the 16-13 overtime loss.
"I've got a lot of confidence in Mark. That's based on how he performed in training camp, in the preseason games," the coach said. "And up until that point in the regular season, New Orleans was his worst game as a pro and he bounced back and had his best game, at Miami in a hostile environment.
"We got the right guy."
But the right guy, being a rookie, may feel he's got to hit every pass. Ryan said that's not necessarily the case.
"We have let him understand, sometimes the pride factor — 'I can get this ball in there,' always trying to do it himself — he doesn't need to do that," he said. "We say it all the time: Just be a part of the solution. You don't have to be the solution yourself."
Any number of players — Edwards, Bart Scott, Damien Woody, Kellen Clemens — talked about keeping Sanchez's spirits up after he put the loss squarely on his shoulders after the game. And Ryan he still likes the vibe he's feeling from his QB.
"He's resilient. He's going to bounce back from this. I believe that," Rex said. "He's mad at himself because he thinks he let his team down. This football team cares about each other. They don't want to see him suffer. Could he have played better? Absolutely. A lot of guys could've played better. When he makes mistakes, they're obviously more glaring. He has to realize that sometimes it's OK to take the incompletion. You don't have to try to force the ball in there."
The road ahead figuratively and literally gets tougher, since the Jets are now preparing this week to fly out Friday to the West Coast for Sunday's game at Oakland. They've lost six of their last eight at the Black Hole dating to 1999. And Sanchez, the Jenkins-less defense and the Jets have got to find a way to shake off any lingering effects of the loss to the Bills and a three-game losing streak.
"I think this team has a lot more character than maybe most people think. I'm banking on that," Ryan said. "We are going to come out and give everything we have on the practice field, fly down to Oakland and try to win one game in a row.
"We're not backing down. We're stepping up. That's the way it's going to be."
Rex Cetera
Ryan said the Jets will add DT Howard Green back to the roster to take the spot that opens with Jenkins going on IR. Green was released to make room for Danny Woodhead to be available for special teams and as a WR if needed due to the injuries to Jerricho Cotchery and Brad Smith. ... The coach wouldn't speculate on his wideouts' status this week: "I think Jerricho feels better, where Brad was kind of [so-so], but we'll see. Things can change quite a bit."
The coach wouldn't discuss his thoughts regarding James Ihedigbo's unsportsmanlike-conduct penalty and ejection for, according to referee Walt Coleman, taking a swing at a Bills player on the overtime kickoff. Ihedigbo said after the game he didn't throw a punch. Ryan said today, "I think there was some jostling there, but it looked to me on the film that he had thrown a punch also." Asked how he'll handle the matter, Ryan said, "I guess we'll see going forward."
Rex put the cost of a timeout for the unsuccessful challenge that punt returner Fred Jackson didn't step out of bounds late in the fourth quarter on himself. The reason was that Ryan saw the stadium replay angle on the Meadowlands videoscreen. "The guy is clearly out of bounds. I'm like 'Well, shoot, let's just take the 6 yards.' ... Then as it went on, I'm getting calls down, 'Oh, we don't have a view of it.' I'm like 'Oh, great.' " The referee's replay review is based on angles available from the TV network cameras, not on any stadium cameras.

But they are 2 plays away from being 5-1. So you can look at it two ways. I would rather look at it with the glass half full. KJ's loss is huge. Somebody is going to have to step up. One game at a time. Beat the Raiders first. GO JETS!!!!!"

For Jets fans who think everything always happens like it has before ("Same old Jets"), ATL and BAL made MAJOR changes to their O's last year when Ryan and Flacco struggled early and that turned out okay for them. Of course, you have to be an ATL or BAL fan who doesn't think everything has to happen in one year. Wonder if MS's first 3 games made REX overconfident?"

Mon, October 19, 2009 - 8:02pm ET"I would like to see one of the other QBs (probably KC, I'd like to see EA) split some playing time with MS. This would enable MS to step back & change his perspective on what the other D is doing & it would help keep the other QB sharp. It would also present extra prep problems for D. Realistically, MS should be told he's on short leash now. He should be benched if he plays like yesterday again."

If I owned a team, the way he's played it since MS got the job would make me want to give him another shot just on that basis alone. It's smart of him and classy of him and who knows, anything can happen, even on the Jets. I think MS and EA have it over him on the basics and on potential, but I wish him well!"

Rex Grossman here we come. I would have made the same challenge. Ihdigbo was being aggressive. No foul"

Similarly, Row, we tried it your way when we sat Chad, KC went 3-5, then we dumped both of them to try Favre, then picked MS. Other than the Miami wild cat puzzle our defense has been good, but we're putting them in too many bad situations. We'll be just fine if we minimize the turnovers and manage the games better."

The running & short passing game is working...1st & goal on the 10 a wasted play with the wildcat/seminole. Sanchez forced to pass result field goal. In overtime 2 tight end set & extra ofensive lineman, only 1 receiver Edwards...triple coverage result 20 yard sack."

This year play calling has been horrendous....sunday Mark Sanchez was having difficulty & the running game was going great & short passes were working. So there was no reason to force downfield throws! Schottenheimer needs to improve his play calling."

Take what's there, Keller will get his catches. I think Sanchez felt he HAD to get him the ball. Not having Brad Smith hurt too, Mark and Braylon need more time together. Play calling puzzled me. Seemed like we were playing for 3 instead of 7 early on."

The Jets gave away a bunch of draft picks 3 draft picks to trade for the spot for Sanchez, two draft picks for S. Greene, and a second and a fifth for Edwards. Its going to be fun watching the Jet fans suffer for years to come. The Jets record in 2009 (3-13). I predict a 48-3 win by Miami in two weeks."

Keller drops and Sanchez turnovers ultimately was our doom. We did have untimely penalties, but they can't win or lose a game. Sanchez didn't step up in the pocket once and make a throw. He needs to stop looking at the pass rush, taking false steps. Sanchez must go through his options. "

From what I've seen EA is the best 2 minute drill QB on the Team. MS can be a great ball control QB, not so much recently. The question the team has to answer is: are we playing to win this year or to train the QB of the future? Go JETS"

I backed Chad and was right and now I have to back up Mark Sanchez. There are no quick fixes in the NFL, so lets be patient and let MS develop. Simplify the offense with more 3 step quick throws and screen passes and let TJ do his thing."

That goes for the Coach, QB, Offense, Defense. In two weeks, A 48-3 win by Miami, after the Jets lose to Oakland. Sanchez will be fine if he is mentored by a veteran(not Clemens). Wed, October 21, 2009 - 2:41pm ET"Ed, I'd like to see EA play sometime, too, but I don't know about your plan. He's looked great in exhib but at least MS and KC's snaps are in real games. But also, maybe Randy can clear up how this QB rule works, I don't think the 3rd QB can come in and out like like that, or can he? And yeah, we're playing this year to train a young QB. If we weren't, we would've kept Favre, gotten Garcia, etc."
Randy Lange Said:
"Tom, it all depends on if the Jets designate a third QB. If they do and if it's Ainge, he can play at any time, but if he plays one snap in the first three quarters, neither of the first two QBs can return in that game."
Anthony Said:
Wed, October 21, 2009 - 4:31pm ET"This is in Reference to Uncle Joe if the Jets want to aquire anyone they could it just depends what they were willing to give. You make it like things are impossible. It might sound impropable but impossible definitly not. We got Braylon didn't we. All you have to do is throw a phone call witha good enough deal like any business and bam you get it done."
Jets Fan Since '64 Tom Said:
Wed, October 21, 2009 - 5:08pm ET"Thanks, Randy! Okay Ed, so no, you couldn't use EA on, say, a 2-minute drill at the end of the 1st half without sitting MS and KC for the rest of the game. Okay, that won't fly. You could activate EA as the 2nd QB and list KC as the 3rd QB, but that doesn't seem likely, smart, or fair to KC given he's got the most NFL snaps. I still say our best move is to give MS this year and see how he does."

Thu, October 22, 2009 - 4:12pm ET"Tom, I'd love to see MS turn it around on Sunday & beat the Raiders; I like the kid but his body language last week makes me nervous. I don't like the idea of simplifying the playbook. Unless they focus on short-intermediate passes & lots of runs. Good point about EA's action being in preseason & not vs 1st stringers. I've been strong KC backer for past 2 yrs but EA shows more mobility & poise."
Jets Fan Since '64 Tom Said:
Thu, October 22, 2009 - 4:46pm ET"I love complex O's, Ed, but simplifying the playbook worked spectacularly for ATL and BAL last year, pulling playoff seasons out of what could've been disasters. Today, of course, Ryan and Flacco are the two most desired young QBs in the NFL, but it seems some Jets fans can't wait a year or 2 or 3 to develop a QB even as one of the Mannings playing in the same stadium pays off on such a bet. Sad."
Ed in Tucson Said:
Fri, October 23, 2009 - 2:01am ET"What's better for MS, a baptism by fire in which he's humbled beyond anything he's ever experienced or to learn from the sideline? I know that nobody in NFL is ready for 2 QB system. I saw it work in AZ inTomey yrs. NFL is too dogmatic. It'll take a Dan Henning or a coach who truly wants to use ALL the talent available to him. What's best for Jets, 2 use all the talent or training wheels 4 MS?"
Jets Fan Since '64 Tom Said:
Fri, October 23, 2009 - 9:13am ET"Good questions, Ed! I'll take baptism by fire, without a couple years of regular play it's very hard for a QB to ever find himself. Our quirky, questionable OC didn't seem to help Chad, KC, or Favre, of course, but he'll be gone for sure next year if MS doesn't do well. It would've been too much for Rex to take over as HC and dump Schotty right away, but a year's enough time to find his own man."
