10/17 — This news will please many Jets fans, including the growing base of Green & White followers in Nebraska, but Danny Woodhead figured to take it all in stride:
Woodhead has been signed today to the Jets' active roster.
The reason for the move is the health of the Jets' wide receiver position — Jerricho Cotchery (hamstring) and Brad Smith (quadriceps) remain listed as doubtful for Sunday's game against the Buffalo Bills — and because just this week Woodhead changed his position from running back to wideout, changing his number as well from 22 to 83.
"I'm excited to play football," Woodhead said during the week about how pumped he is over what this move might portend. "I was out all last season, and anything I can do to help this team out is all I want to do. I want to help this team win a Super Bowl."
The legendary Division II back from Chadron State, tucked in the northwestern corner of the Cornhusker State, had yet to be activated since joining the team as an undrafted free agent after the 2008 draft. He spent last season on injured reserve and this summer, despite an impressive preseason during which he led the Jets with 226 rushing yards, was waived, cleared waivers and then re-signed to the Jets' practice squad.
There is no word from the team whether Woodhead will be in uniform against the Bills. While he is now on the active roster, he could be one of the Jets' eight deactivations for the game. That won't be known until 2:45 p.m. for the 4:15 start.
Danny said come what may, he'll be ready.
"I've just got to make sure I'm down on all the concepts at wide receiver. You want to know the whole offense, but from week to week the game plan chances," he said of this week's work at WR. "I feel comfortable catching the ball. That's not something that's going to change. It's not out of the backfield, it's just from another spot.
"I'm really here to help this team out any way possible. If that's on the field, great. If it's off the field, great. I'm just going to keep doing what I'm doing."
To make room for Woodhead on the 53-man roster, the Jets released defensive tackle Howard Green.

Sat, October 17, 2009 - 5:02pm ET"Well, Lance Alworth, possibly the greatest WR in football history, went from halfback to WR successfully enough, so why can't Woodhead do it? I look forward to watching him and Slauson repping Nebraska on the younger, stronger team we're building over the next few years. Sorry to lose Green, though, he had his moments and we need all the DL guys we can get. Even wonder if we might get one by Tue.?"

Danny Woodhead killed two birds with one stone. They were both Eagles. Chuck Norris goes to bed at night wearing a Danny Woodhead jersey. Tyler Durden created Danny Woodhead to feel better about himself. "

I was cussing up a storm when I heard the Jets cut him after such a great preseason. But I think his bursting speed, quick feet and great hands will help us KILL BILLS VOLUME 1. I hope he gets out there Sunday and has a great game. I'd like to see him with Braylon, J-Co, Clowney, and Smith. I think we have a lot of offensive weapons and they are starting to gel together as the season moves on! GO JETS!"

The Bills defense will likely pay the guy little attention considering he came off the practice squad, which could mean an opportunity for big plays considering how I have seen him run with some open field."

Randy Lange Said:
"Ira, I don't have Ben Graham for any fakes. His two rushes and one pass were all the result of botched holds. The last fake punt by the Jets before Monday night was by Quincy Carter as the upback against Cincinnati in the 2004 opener -- he lost 2 yards. As we've said, the last successful fake punt was by Matt Turk in the 2002 home opener for 14 yards. I don't know if or when the Jets last converted two fake punts in a game."

Sat, October 17, 2009 - 10:48pm ET"you guys are all crazy! just because this guy can do it against small-time colleges, 2nd and 3rd string scrubs in the preseason, doesn't mean he can do it in the real NFL where everybody is big, strong, and fast! This guy is going to do nothing, I'm calling it right now. Say whatever you want, but this guy is nothing more than a no. 2 or 3 back, and will be only useful on slants, drags, and screens"
scjoe Said:
Sat, October 17, 2009 - 11:52pm ET"That's good news for Woodhead, it really took me by surprise that they brought him up this quickly after giving him time at the WR position. I would suspect that since they did bring him up, and they released Green, that he would be active for the game tomorrow. I believe this, along with Clowney being more involved in the offense is going to pay huge dividends."

There were coaches at every level watching this kid since he was 15 years old. More than his physical abilities his mental approach is is strongest attribute. He wants to win and he will win eventually if given the chance. Looks like he is headed in the right direction. "

Sun, October 18, 2009 - 1:13pm ET"Well Jetsman, if Woodhead is only good for slants, drags and screens, thats pretty usefull and will still help this team out, I can picture Danny as the Wes Welker guy"

Sun, October 18, 2009 - 1:54pm ET"Jetsman you contradict yourself, you say Woodhead will do nothing, and then you say he will only be useful on slants, drags and screens, so which is it? If he is effective on those plays then it sounds like he will do something. If he can do anything to help this team, I'm all for him."

Sun, October 18, 2009 - 3:30pm ET"That's really cool for Woodhead to get this far and get to suit up for a real game! Hope he can get some touches. I'm sure his friends and family are very excited and proud. As a little white guy too, I couldn't be happier to hear about this! Go Woodhead! Hope to see TJ, Leon, Greene & Woodhead get tons of touches, especially w/ the weather conditions! Expect 40+ rushes!"

His college career success was as a back and, he is not a very big receiver target at 5'7". If he put on a Buffalo BIlls uniform, I bet Sanchez could get the ball to him. "

Your outstanding character, high morals, athleticism, and dignity have always contributed to the outstanding young man you have become. I am fortunate to know you :) GO JETS!!!!!!!"

Mon, October 19, 2009 - 12:25pm ET"Danny Woodhead was 3rd amongst all tailbacks in the entire NFL in pre-season rushing yards. Woodhead is another Leon Washington type and it's a crying shame that no team sees him as a tailback. His phenomenal pre-season performance, mind boggling NCAA record statistics and 4.33/4.38 40 time with good agility numbers should speak for itself."
scbaker61 Said:
Mon, October 19, 2009 - 1:33pm ET"Woodhead is a running back or tailback, not a wide receiver...the Jets have had a wide receiver in Marcus Henry on their team/practice squad for two years now, and they don't move him up? He has the height, weight, and speed that is needed at this position; why not bring him up since he is already familiar with all the plays at that position? Makes no sense to me! Dumb, very dumb!"
