10/13 — Two things came across loud and clear from Jets head coach Rex Ryan's recently concluded conference call with reporters early this afternoon following the Monday night 31-27 loss to the Dolphins.
Rex is still ticked. And he's putting it on himself as well as his coaches and players to get unticked quick.
"Absolutely, it was a humbling experience, and the competitor in me is mad," Ryan said. "It's like OK, I've had bad games in the past, but I've never surrendered three leads in the fourth quarter to anybody."
Since he assumed coordinator status in 2005, that's a true statement. In fact, Ryan was involved in only two previous games as Baltimore's defensive coordinator when the Ravens lost as many as two leads in an entire game. In 2005 Baltimore beat Houston, 16-15. In 2007, the Ravens lost to the Browns, 33-30, in overtime.
Rex put the playcalling onus on himself around midnight in the Land Shark Stadium visitors' interview room, and today he reiterated some things he wanted to have done better.
"We knew they had two outstanding backs. The thing I never gave enough credit to was Henne," he said of QB Chad Henne, who completed 20 of 26 passes overall and hit four third-down completions to move the chains, three coming in the last quarter. "He made some great throws during the game. He was on fire. And he made some good third-down calls. All we had to do was make one play, but to his credit he was making those plays."
Another area Ryan questioned himself on was on the week's preparation.
"I wasn't happy with our scout teams last week," he said. "I think we had a decent mental week, we had a couple of mental gaffes. But you can't be a consistent defense if you don't know where your guys are going to be. They've got to play off each other, and the only way to do that is they've got to go full-speed in practice.
"If I'm going to play a block a certain way, I think we've got to show that on the practice field. Maybe it looked different on the practice field than it did on the game field. Till we get that consistency, we're not going to be a dominant defense. You can't go at the pace of your scout team. You're either coaching it or allowing it to happen. I'm not going to allow it to happen."
But the good news from the coach's viewpoint is that in his experience his defenses always bounce back.
"I go back to last year, two times," Ryan said of the Ravens' defense of '08. "The Colts, they lit us up, and we played the Giants. Both times that unit responded. And I'm expecting this unit to really respond. I know we have the talent, the pride and character. We're embarrassed by the way we played.
"I know we truly won't get it back till we play Miami again, but this week right now presents its own problems. Buffalo has some outstanding weapons. We've got to get it done right now. We're not looking past anybody. This is a must-win for us. I think we have to respond. And I think playing at home in front of our fans is going to be huge for us.
"This was a step back. Now we've got to make a huge leap forward."
Rex Cetera
WR Jerricho Cotchery was used sparingly at Miami due to the hamstring that had bothered him during the week, but Ryan said Cotchery didn't aggravate the injury in the game. "We'll know more later today. I think he came out of the game fine." ... Similarly, nothing more on Brad Smith, who left the game with a foot injury.
Rex said he was "really encouraged" by the play of WR Braylon Edwards, QB Mark Sanchez and the offense. And on David Clowney, who had four receptions for 72 yards, he said, "I was proud of the way David played. He was the intended receiver four times and he caught four passes. He also had his guy burned a couple of other times and we couldn't get him the ball.
"I truly believe we'll bounce back," Ryan added. "As confident as I was last week that our offense would bounce back, I feel the same way about our defense."
The coach on the two successful fake punts called by special teams coordinator Mike Westhoff: "Mike does a great job of studying the opponent. We thought we had a couple of available. ... To Mike's credit, he saw the opportunity. He knows he's got the green light from me anytime."
Sanchez: Another Pepsi Nomination
Sanchez received his fourth nomination for Pepsi Rookie of the Week. He completed 12 of 24 passes for 172 yards and one touchdown to Edwards, led three TD drives of 63 yards or longer, and made the longest completion of his career to date on the 53-yard connection with David Clowney.
Sanchez, who won the award after each of his first three games, has competition this week from Colts WR Austin Collie, Eagles WR Jeremy Maclin, Broncos RB Knowshon Moreno and Giants WR Hakeem Nicks. You can vote for Pepsi Rookie of the Week here.

Where was Keller once again this time im not sure if I saw him at all"

Tue, October 13, 2009 - 5:17pm ET"Well they better win and win convincingly this week or they will be where last years team was only in October instead of December. The offense looked revitalized and sharp for the most part. When will the Jets learn that Thomas Jones is just a short yardage back? Time to give the rookie from Iowa some carries! "

Tue, October 13, 2009 - 5:20pm ET"A lot of if's by my fellow Jet fans, how about this if? IF they could not control and pressure a "rookie" (it was his first NFL start) with a very week receiving corp, what will happen next week against the Bills with Edwards throwing to TO and Evans? Let's hope the Bills do not use the wildcat too."
jetman37 Said:
Tue, October 13, 2009 - 5:56pm ET"Rex was outsmarted this week. The playcalling was rediculous, other than third and long it looked like manginis defense. Yet that wasnt what hurt the team the most. The entire defense got thrown around by the dolphins o line and played like they were scared to death. Leon and Braylon were the only ones that played like men. If they played like men they woulda stopped them once and would be 4-1."
Jeremy Said:
Tue, October 13, 2009 - 6:32pm ET"Rex was completely out-coached! That game made me sick! It was a disgrace to watch that Defense! Shotty is so predictable it's disgusting to watch. Tue, October 13, 2009 - 7:35pm ET"TJ and Leon both averaged 4 yards a carry if you take away the dives for TD's. I don't know why people continue to criticize a back for not getting a 100 yards when he had a whole 13 carries, and two of them were TD's! Jenkins must play better. Safety play was HORRIBLE. Rhodes should have never let Ginn past him. I miss Chris Baker. We also need to work on Kick returns, sign Justin Miller. Go Jets"

leroy Said:
Tue, October 13, 2009 - 9:03pm ET"To say I was underwhelmed is not enough. You have to pressure the wildcat, get penetration so why not blitz when they went into the wildcat? It couldnt have been any worse than sitting back in the 3-4 and waiting to see what happened? Aisde from obvious passing downs the defense was far too passive. "

Tue, October 13, 2009 - 9:17pm ET"You need to have some faith in Rex. I am a Jets Fan because of Rex Ryan. He will respond! Remember he's far from being like Mangini....He hasrun things differently since the moment he got to New York. He will this week as well. I can't wait until Miami comes to New York."
onadam5 Said:
Tue, October 13, 2009 - 9:21pm ET"The fact is our defense got pushed up and down the field, the fish won at the line of scrimmage, and if it wasnt for two fake punts and a questionable interference call the fish would have won by 21...Sanchez shook off last week though, that was cool"
Jake Berk Said:
Tue, October 13, 2009 - 9:25pm ET"Despite the awful game, I'm a little encouraged. Once Sheppard and Strickland come back it will balance out the secondary because with Lowery in the game, we are always forced to give him safety help, which always isolates Revis, even tho he still plays great (not last night) and takes away either rhodes or leonhard from our run D or help somewhere else. As for our line, I think it was as simple"
Jake Berk Said:
Tue, October 13, 2009 - 9:27pm ET"as simple as Miami wanting it more. Their line was destroying our big guys up front as well as our talented linebackers and their play call was excellent. i think when we play them at home we will be better prepared and humbled, therefore smashing them. i also think our offense is finally awake. moving Stuckey will be great for Clowney i think he will be more involved, as well as Keller, edwards"

Tue, October 13, 2009 - 9:38pm ET"WE WERE MOVING THE BALL WELL WITH LEON BUT THEN WE WENT AWAY FROM IT IN 2ND HALF?.....THOMAS JONES IS RUNNING WELL BUT HE NEEDS THE ROCK AT LEAST 25 TIMES TO SEE THE RESULTS!!!!!OUR OFFENSE PLAYED WELL ENUFF TO WIN BUT OUR 'D' DID NOT STEP IT UP THE (BEAR)DEFENSE WAS WORKING BUT WE WENT AWAY FROM THAT!!!!!???????"
Ray Said:
Tue, October 13, 2009 - 9:48pm ET"I don't know if i was the only person who seen this but the runs to the outside were ridiculous. Why would you leave a corner who is undersized on a fullback in the wildcat. The corners like revis couldnt peel of the block because cobbs or ricky williams were throwing them around. start putting linebackers on the outside. This way they can peel of the blocks and stop the run. Have the corners lb."
Jetmando Said:
Tue, October 13, 2009 - 9:51pm ET"Offense played well enough to win and the special teams were excellent. Whomever coached the defense didn't prepare them properly. Buffalo sacked Henne 6 times the previous week by Buffalo! You were waiting for half time adjustments, instead they get smacked around even worse. Miami was hyped and ready and executed well. They Jets looked like they never seen a wildcat before and it scared them "
serge Said:
Tue, October 13, 2009 - 9:54pm ET"as a 16yrs jets fan i should be use to disappointment. could someone tell me why does it hurt so bad? I'm accustom to being teased especially by giants fans. who's to blame for this loss, lets just say that ST was great, they helped the offense a whole heap. OFFENSE WAS WAY BETTER THAN LAST WEEK, but SHOTTY showed his lack of imagination and his inability to use his players effectively a little..."
serge Said:
Tue, October 13, 2009 - 10:25pm ET"...shotty has alittle part to play in this loss. when the defense is on the field because they have a hard time stopping the stray cat or the alley cat or what ever they call it, bottom line is they fail to skin the cat and our offense wasn't able to consistantly sustain drives to that will allow the defense to rest. so yes i blame the offense as well not alot but they are responsible somewhat "
Jets Fan Since '64 Tom Said:
Tue, October 13, 2009 - 10:27pm ET"MJV, the vets were for when we thought we could win with Chad and Favre. The young guys we're playing now are for winning with MS. I'll put my money on winning with MS, given how good he looks so far and how our best players on O and D are the youngest ones. Randy, I gotta wonder what you know about playing QB if you thought the passes MS threw to BE were airballs. I guess you'd rather have Orton?"

Jetsman Said:
Tue, October 13, 2009 - 10:52pm ET"Hey guys, I was very upset at the loss and was feeling a bad feeling about the season, but guys listen. If we win every easy game (2 BUF, OAK, TB, CAR, JAC) and win against Miami ONCE, we are guaranteed a 10-6 season at the very least, unless something goes horribly wrong. That also means that we lose to New England, lose to Atlanta, lose to Indianapolis, and lose to the BENGALS!! Season aint over"
Howie D Said:
Tue, October 13, 2009 - 11:06pm ET"I went to the game, and still have a sick-to-the-stomach feeling. We needed that win. Simply out coached! Must knock Ronnie Brown out of the game, he's the key to their wildcat. Rookie coaching errors, but I think Rex is good enough recover. We control our destiny. We're solid and should be the best in AFC East in the end. "

All the bluster is firing up the opponents more than us it seems. Not a good thing! I like Rex a lot, but his jawing with opposing players, other than being childish, is also backfiring(ex. The Jets D without Strickland and Sheppard should maybe look into bringing in Chris McCalister?"

Wed, October 14, 2009 - 2:42am ET"Very disappointed with the loss to Miami. I had some concern before the game that the offense might not be sharp - Miami's run D is very good and I wasn't sure how well Mark would bounce back after last week. Never did I expect our D to get pushed around like they did. Rex is right, it comes down to preparation and frankly, he and his coaches did not prepare the defense well at all. "
Ray Said:
Wed, October 14, 2009 - 2:51am ET"Two things from the game and week leading up to it came to mind. First, with all the chatter going back and forth between the two teams defenses, Rex, Crowder, Taylor, etc. Isn't is funny that the game turned into an OFFENSIVE battle? And second, did anyone notice the block Leon laid on Chowder? They hate eachother and Leon laid a de-cleater on him!"

Wed, October 14, 2009 - 7:04am ET"Positives from this game Clowney will be a good slot WR once J-Co gets back. Edwards is a stud and Sanchez rebounded well. Negatives not getting Keller the ball.Every TE had burned the Fish until then. The D never was in sync. Henning kept them off balance all night. And it was inexcusable to let Henne have all that time with no pressure. HC made a rookie mistake with the T.O. They'll bounce back."

Revis bit on a double move and he was left alone as always which is never a problem. Kerry saw what happened and tried to get over to help. Revis never thought Ginn would bounce it out for the long ball after his 1st move. I thought they go 3-1 with these 4 games. I was afraid of the Bills game instead."

Wed, October 14, 2009 - 7:34am ET"Westhoff gets a game ball for this game. If it weren't for his two fakes that kept drives going this gsme might have gotten out of hand. Real bad taste in my mouth after this one but its time to move on and take care of the Bills. I know its one game at a time but for me as a fan the goal is to get to 6-2 by the bye week and then retool for the home stretch. GO JETS!!!!"
schuyler Said:
Wed, October 14, 2009 - 8:12am ET"I think it's about clock control, those quick strikes put a tired defense on the field and in turn made them more tired. Wed, October 14, 2009 - 8:24am ET"Just like we supported our rookie QB last week, we have to support our coach and defense. Wed, October 14, 2009 - 10:42am ET"In reality, if it wasn't for 2 fake punt conversions, and 2 questionable pass int calls on Miami, the Jets only score 10 points. Me and my pops went to the game and sat smack dab in the first row amidst all the obnoxious fish fans. I have to say, I have never been more embarrased by the play of our defense ever. How can a team allow one punt and not even get close enough to breathe on the QB. Rexie definately let us down this week."

Wed, October 14, 2009 - 11:11am ET"I saw a sack On Sanchez and it was for a loss and I dont know how some of you didnt see it. Its even in his stats for the Miami game. I think I have been quiet to long in saying this. It could be Clemens in here and he would still be in the same boat cause the O-Line is nt protecting. Clemens plays with heart and Sanchez needs more experience and we are hurting his future by playing him early"
Tom Spicer Said:
Wed, October 14, 2009 - 11:35am ET"The Jets got beat down they ran the ball down our throats & we knew it was coming which makes it even worse. Revis getting burnt by Ginn a scrub & not just on the deep ball he had multiple grabs. Lowery & Coleman garbage when are we getting Lito & Strickland coming back? Leonard he is not explosive he has 1 good punt return all year & he is not a good tackler. Scott stop running your mouth & play "
Robb21 Said:
Wed, October 14, 2009 - 11:35am ET"Serge, the reason that this loss hurt so bad is because we are finally coming together as a Team with an attitude and a whole new swag where we believe we are a good Team (which as you know, the Jets never had with there previous "lets run the clock out and try not to blow the lead" attitude). This loss was so hard because the D got pushed around all night. We'll be ok though buddy, hang in there"
Ira Said:
Wed, October 14, 2009 - 11:35am ET"Jets 9mm, Get over it is the right words. A loss is a loss but they had chances to win both games. Even @NO at 17-10 if they made a stop on 3rd down or 4th down i felt they would've tied the game. As for the Fish 5 min to go with the lead they needed 1 play to sal that game and didn't get it. I fully expect a great bounce back game vs the Bills this week. GO JETS!!!!"

It looked like a different team that played the Pats. I'm a along time jets fans and will contonue to be but I would like one more year to brag about it. Let's get it together."

Wed, October 14, 2009 - 11:55am ET"ball we got ran over. O line you guys have 3 pro bowl players PLAY LIKE IT! your not run blocking your not pass blocking COME ON! SHOW SOME HEART! If the Jets dont beat the Bills this week by at least 10 points than I will say right now we are not a playoff team I am so disgusted I could throw this computer out the window. "

Wed, October 14, 2009 - 12:15pm ET"First off, we do not need a pass rusher. We need the ends to contain, and Jenkins to not get pancaked (several times) by the phin's center b/c he was out of shape. I also know that TJ had 1312 and 15TD's last year, and we HAVE to use him to win games. 13 carries is pitiful. Sanchez missed 12 throws, and was bailed out at least 3. RUN THE BALL! The defense will fix it's self. We can win on Sunday!"

Wed, October 14, 2009 - 2:08pm ET"Randy, I read that we do not have to give a 2nd round pick for Lito cause he has not played 85% of the snaps. He has now missed 3 1/2 games how many games does he have to miss in order for the Jets to give a 4th round pick instead of a 3rd round pick?"
Randy Lange Said:
"Tom, sorry but I just don't have the contract information or the play-count information to even speculate on that. As a rough rule of thumb, 85 percent of 16 games is 13.6 games"

Wed, October 14, 2009 - 2:17pm ET"Tom S, right on about the O line. Row, a year is a long time for a 31-yr-old RB, TJ looks nothing like last year. Saying MS missed 12 throws is lunacy, like the folks who say Lowery gets beat on every play. Jets fan I am, MS shows more heart, poise, and accuracy in 5 games than KC has in his life, you'll never see KC make the kind of throws MS has. REAL rebuilding isn't always that much fun, gang."

Wed, October 14, 2009 - 2:32pm ET"The players need to believe in themselves more. When the fish got off to a great start, they all started hanging their heads. Hey, any team can get off to a great start, but suck it up princess and get back to believing in yourself and your team. Look, we have a lot of great players. Not good, great players on both sides of the ball. We can beat anyone out there, but we need to believe."

Wed, October 14, 2009 - 2:43pm ET"Rex needs to realize that he is not coaching Baltimore's Defense anymore! Many of his comments center on how, "we bounced back after Indy torched us." Yeah, Baltimore did, but YOU don't have Ray Lewis & Ed Reed to bail you out anymore! Step into reality & stop assuming this defense is as good as the Ravens! If he doesn't NYJ could be in for a disappointing finish."

Wed, October 14, 2009 - 3:54pm ET"Jet fan since 64' ...KC he hasen't shown it yet as a pro, but you are wrong to say... his whole life...I'm out here in Oregon and KC at the college level was THE REAL DEAL, over and over and over again! I will give credit where credit is due but lets not compare MS and his 5 games to another players entire life. By the way..MS was 14-2 in college I wonder what state MS lost those two games in?"
Jets Fan Since '64 Tom Said:
Wed, October 14, 2009 - 4:58pm ET"Downtown, I love Oregon football, food, and women but the name ain't Jets Fan Since '64 for nothin'. I've watched KC since college and he has the same serious issues now as he did then -- happy feet, only fair arm, awful pocket presence. MS is making him look like the rookie now, wherever MS or USC ever lost. In fact EA easily had the best college career of all three but this is the NFL, baby!"

QB is jellin with the receivers and gettin better 4. The new arrivals, Braylon, Clowney,Woodhead and Greene use them all you have great weapons.5. Defense can only get better, you have the blitz down pat ,Stop the run and you'll Dominate The Game .The JETS are JELLIN, Teams Beware"

Run based offense..Should have seen this offense coming a mile away. And for everyone who says that we have a couple of easy games coming, those are the same peeps who thought this was a gimme. This is the NFL, you aint going to roll your helmet on the feild and get a win."
