File Under: Brad Smith, Jerricho Cotchery, Kerry Rhodes, Rex Ryan, Braylon Edwards, Lito Sheppard, Damien Woody, Mark Sanchez, Donald Strickland
10/08 — All eyes today were on the new pair of hands.
"You got a great big guy there," head coach Rex Ryan said of No. 17, Braylon Edwards, joining the Jets' WR group at today's practice at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center. "I said, 'Did we sign a defensive end or is that a wideout?' He's at least 6'3", 220 or 215. He looks big. He's in shape, but that's just a big man. So it was kind of fun seeing him out there. Guys were getting after him and challenging him, things like that.
"He had a good practice."
"He caught about 50 balls and dropped one," Ryan tabulated. "I don't think we need to be overly concerned if he drops a ball. He's way ahead of where I even thought he'd be."
Just as important to some are which cornerbacks will be available for the Jets against the Dolphins. Ryan was optimistic about Lito Sheppard (quad), less so about Donald Strickland (ankle), but still wasn't promising anything after the practice.
Sheppard, Rex said, "was limited today. He was practicing, though, so I'm real positive. I'm not positive he'll play for sure, but I'm positive he practiced today. That was good to see him out there. He was moving around. We're taking him in and out of drills so he's not getting every rep, but he's out there and he's moving pretty well."
The coach wasn't so sure about Strickland, who got off to a strong start in the nickel.
"I keep wanting him to come along and think he's going to come along, but it seems to be a slow process," Ryan said. "We're not saying he's out definitely right now. I'd like to see him practice."
As for two other starters, WR Jerricho Cotchery (hamstring) was limited today but Ryan said, "We expect Jerricho obviously to play." And RT Damien Woody (foot) did not practice but the coach said, "Damien I feel a little better about" than he did in the previous few days since Woody left the Saints game early in the fourth quarter.

Mark's Fame-ous Footwear
Mark Sanchez is now in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Or more accurately, his shoes are.
The shoes Sanchez wore for the Jets' Game 3 win over Tennessee are now on exhibit in the Pro Football Today Gallery. The reason the Hall requested the shoes (the first time since Peyton Manning in 1998 that a rookie artifact was added to the Hall's collection) was because in that game Sanchez became the first rookie QB since the Bengals' Greg Cook in 1969 to start and win his team's first three games of a season.
The story and a shot of the historic shoes are on the Hall of Fame's site here.
Ground and Pound with ... B.Smith?
Here's a little chart I like to check on from time to time, and that is how Brad Smith is faring against the rest of the NFL's infrequent carriers in rushing average. Last year Smith's 9.4-yard average on 12 runs was second in the league for all players with at least 10 attempts behind Denver WR Eddie Royal (9.9).
This season we're starting smaller, looking at all players with at least two carries after the first four weeks. Smith checks in at No. 3, behind leader Saints WR Robert Meachem (who had a 13-yard end-around vs. the Jets last Sunday) and one rung ahead of a player the Green & White will see Monday night in Ted Ginn.
Here are the NFL's leading rushers (all WRs) by per-carry average with a minimum of two carries:
| Player, Team | Atts | Yds | Avg |
| 1. Robert Meachem, NO | 2 | 28 | 14.0 |
| 2. Patrick Crayton, DAL | 3 | 39 | 13.0 |
| 3. Brad Smith, JETS | 4 | 42 | 10.5 |
| 4. Ted Ginn, MIA | 3 | 31 | 10.3 |
Edwards concurred.
"I'm in shape and have been starting up until this point in Cleveland," he said. "I'm hard-working. As I said, it went well with the terminology. That is the big thing coming over to a new system: Can you get it? Can you learn it? It went real well today. I feel pretty confident."

B-Edwards may pan out hoping he does but we need to stop throwing away picks every year .. For those who are wondering Mike -T has said Leon-W will get his contract done before B-Edwads gets a new deal "
scjoe Said:
Thu, October 8, 2009 - 6:56pm ET"I would like to see Brad Smith taking the snap in the wildcat/Seminole with Leon coming in motion, that would give them a more balanced run pass option. Usually, Leon is taking the snap with Smith coming in motion. This way, if Edwards or Cotch gets open, the pass play is there for Brad. Are you listening Shotty?"
Ed in Tucson Said:
Thu, October 8, 2009 - 7:04pm ET"I keep hoping that Shotty puts in some option plays. I'd love to see it run to the side that Edwards is on. If BE is as good a blocker as they say, he could help BS get good yardage, or BE can slip off the block & take a pass from BS for a big gain. Add to the uncertainty for the D & gain a step or 2. "

Ira Said:
Thu, October 8, 2009 - 8:00pm ET"Randy, I am not a coach but i would rest Lito this week even if he did practice. Lowery and Drew played very well vs the Saints and the Fish have nowhere near the type of WR's that the Saints have. Rest Lito so he is 100 % for TO and Evans the following week. I quess Woody will be a gameday decision. They need him and hope he is healed. Like Randy charted Smith can make things happen."
Jets Fan Since '64 Tom Said:
Thu, October 8, 2009 - 10:16pm ET"I sympathize, MJV, especially when I see H. Nicks already looking like a star. But BE has proven skills and he's as young as some of our key guys, so it's hard to pass on him and you gotta believe the coaches know more about Stuck and Clown's immediate potential than we do. Ed and scjoe, I'd like to see NO dumb trick plays, just a solid O built on our solid QB, O line, runners, and receivers."
Jimmer Said:
Fri, October 9, 2009 - 2:49am ET"I was at first concerned about the Sanchez trade. But, after seeing film on him, I quickly became ok with it. I'm starting to come around on the BE trade. A change of scenery gotta be good for him. He wants to be near modeling and Rhodes got some connections. He won't make any noise here, knowing he'll be blowing the spotlights of the city and all. KR should remind him of that after the first boo."
Rick Said:
Fri, October 9, 2009 - 3:32am ET"This will be the 1st time this season we will be playing in Miami, the next time we WON`T be playing the Dolphins....if ya know what i mean!!!!!"
Ed in Tucson Said:
Fri, October 9, 2009 - 9:54am ET"I don't want to see "dumb trick plays" either but an option play is hardly a trick play. Jerome Bettis successfully ran & threw the option pass for years. All I can say is that I'm glad Jets Fan Since '64 Tom isn't the Jets' OC. The only difference with what I'm talking about is that the guy carrying the ball could stop & throw the ball if he sees a wide open WR downfield."
Tom Spicer Said:
Fri, October 9, 2009 - 11:20am ET"Mike Jet Vet, I am getting sick of your comments captain negative. Our 1st round picks dont work out. 1 Revis best corner in the NFL 2 Ellis lead the league in sacks for a 3-4 DE last year. 3 Sanchez rookie of the month 4 Keller 1 of the best pass catching TE'S in the game 5 Mangold the best center in the NFL 6 Da Brick last year pro bowl 7 Thomas a solid player. Give me a break!"
Frankie Said:
Fri, October 9, 2009 - 11:48am ET"IRA- couldn't agree more.if Lito is not 100% save him for the bills. hate so see him reinjure something and we lose him any longer than we have. fins with henne at qb and their WRs lowery will do fine. Everybody should get a second change.. and this is BE's..put ur self in his shoes..losing team bad rep already... now he is on a winning team with a great coach and team players. HE WILL DO GREAT!! "
Jets Fan Since '64 Tom Said:
Fri, October 9, 2009 - 12:18pm ET"An option pass or two might be okay, Ed, but if we wanted Smith to throw the ball we should've tried him at QB years ago instead of screwing around with this wildcat nonsense now that we've got MS. And if I was the Jets OC, I'd focus on building MS and this O into the kind of O you see at IND, SD, NE, and the other New York team. Don't see a lot of option passes or wildcat at those places, do ya?"
Vaughn Said:
Fri, October 9, 2009 - 12:42pm ET"Randy, what are your thoughts about the running game right now. How many touches will Shonn Greene be getting this week? Why is the offense not getting Leon more touches and screen plays when he is such an explosive player? Will Shonn Greene be factored in around the goal line? Please share!"
Randy Lange Said:
"Vaughn, I have no way to predict Shonn Greene's touches or usage around the goal line. But on Leon Washington I can say that since both Rex Ryan and Brian Schottenheimer spoke about it this week, Leon's nine offensive touches at New Orleans was an aberration based on the game, not in keeping with his 16 touches a game for the first three games and not what the Jets coaches want him to have."
Row Said:
Fri, October 9, 2009 - 2:09pm ET"Spicer, while I'm not in Jet Vet mode, I think we really reached for Keller, and he's been a ghost the past few weeks when we needed him. Sanchez has averaged at least one TO every game, and needs to step up. Keller should be catching all the balls like Celek for Philly when Mcnabb went out. Instead he's been a body. We are a defensive team caught in a game where offense beats good teams. Go Jets"
Jets Fan Since '64 Tom Said:
Fri, October 9, 2009 - 2:47pm ET"I REALLY gotta tip my hat to Row for saying what most others don't have the guts to say -- and for not endlessly repeating the "Defense wins championships" mantra! So four games in, our D looks great and almost all our problems are on O. No one should be surprised if they knew what Row just said about O beating good teams. No need to panic, we've got the tools, but let's wake Schotty up and GO!"
Ray Said:
Fri, October 9, 2009 - 3:32pm ET"Row, this is exactly why they felt the need to go out and get Edwards. Keller was never supposed to be double covered. He was supposed to be a matchup problem. But Stuckey was easily being single covered. Now we will see Keller being more productive. No third DB or LB is going to be able to cover him."
Stephen Said:
Fri, October 9, 2009 - 3:51pm ET"Randy, Can we get Rex Ryan to do the Truffle Shuffle? Can you bring it up to him at the next Press Conference? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5whaRkuipU"
Randy Lange Said:
"No, Stephen, I can't."
Tom Spicer Said:
Fri, October 9, 2009 - 4:31pm ET"Row, I hear what you are saying but Sanchez is a rookie he is going to make mistakes we just have to live with it. Also Keller I think is not playing as well as we think he should because Sanchez is a rookie so we dont throw the ball alot this year. I dont think Keller will do what we thought coming into the year. BUT next year Sanchez in year 2 with Braylon, Cotch & Keller FORGET ABOUT IT!"
Mike Jet Vet Said:
Fri, October 9, 2009 - 6:04pm ET"Tom Spicer your kidding right Ellis is no where near the elite pass rushers in the league .Da Brick is average at best Hope your not talking about Thomas the linebacker he has been MIA till Rex got here Mangold & Revis are the only 2 worth 1st rounds M- Sanchez only played 4 games 2 of which stunk .Why no mention of V-G?doesn't suit you ... Like I said Any way the wind blows right Tom S "

Jets Fan Since '64 Tom Said:
Sat, October 10, 2009 - 12:04pm ET"MJV, I grew up in working-class Queens, so I know how New York sports fans talk. But I don't think it does any good to say 2 of MS's first 4 games "stunk." He won 3 out of 4 of those games. He showed great poise and often incredible accuracy, like with all those 3rd-down completions. And he's been hampered by idiot calls from Schotty, several of which a more established QB would've refused to run."

Every freaking year we trade away our draft picks & give potentially good players away for these 1 year wonders most of our good players Leon included came in those so called mid round picks then take into account the players we need to replace when age sets in comes from those same mid rounds "
