File Under: Darrelle Revis, Fireman Ed, Mike Pettine, Bart Scott, Barking with Bart

09/21 — Bart Scott’s played a lot of football in his eight-year career. In fact, the 29-year-old inside linebacker has appeared in 111 regular-season games and five playoff contests. So he’s seen a lot, but nothing quite like Jets Nation’s fan participation during the Green & White’s 16-9 win over the New England Patriots.

“I’ve never seen anything like that. It’s a bigger stadium, and the way that stadium is built, it’s like a bowl. It was deafening to me,” he said on this week’s installment of “Barking with Bart.” “On defense, we had to walk up to each other and communicate and use our hand signals because it was tough to hear. It was awesome. That was my first time watching the maestro with the 'J-E-T-S, Jets! Jets! Jets!' chant, how he sets it up.”

Fireman Ed is the “maestro” and Scott also referred to him as “a pure conductor”. But there were a number of Jets geniuses at the Meadowlands on Sunday as Tom Brady suffered through one of his toughest games as a pro. Although the Jets didn’t record a sack, Brady was hurried more than a dozen times — Rex Ryan and his staff counted 23 hits on the QB — and often found a seat on his backside during a 23-of-47 performance. The Pats were held to three field goals and Brady was also picked off once.

“I think it was tough for him to figure out what we were doing and figure out the looks we were giving him. We were giving him multiple sets — we had a tremendous package in this week,” Scott said. "We had to learn pretty much a whole new defense. We put in a whole new defense this week and we really executed. Kudos go to the players in the defensive room for picking that system up so fast, for guys to go out there and make plays. Everybody made plays out there yesterday.”

For the second consecutive week, Darrelle Revis locked on one of the top receivers in football and triumphed again. Just like Andre Johnson the week before, Randy Moss was a non-factor as he finished with four catches for 24 yards.

“I had tremendous respect for Revis even before I got here, thought he was an awesome talent,” said the "Madbacker." “But he’s even better than advertised.”

And this Ryan/Mike Pettine-led defense has also exceeded expectations. You knew the Jets had talented players, but you didn’t know how it would all work in the early going with a new system and minus OLB Calvin Pace for four games. But the Jets’ “D,” which welcomed back DE Shaun Ellis Sunday and also had corners Dwight Lowery and Drew Coleman fill in admirably for Lito Sheppard and Donald Strickland, respectively, held the Pats and the Texans to nine points combined.

“I didn’t think a lot of people gave us our just due for what we were able to do against Houston,” Scott said of the season-opening 24-7 win. “It was 'just' Houston — 'We’re supposed to beat Houston.' But you can see Houston yesterday against a great Tennessee defense put up almost 400 yards offense.

“So I think we’ll start getting our just due. All we say is, ‘You don’t have to crown us, you don’t have to say anything to us.’ There are no trophies for the first two games. The most important thing — what we want — is just respect us.”

You have to think the respect is coming for this 2-0 club. With guys like Scott inside the locker room, the Jets are a hungry bunch.

“Not to be funny, but we can be better. That wasn’t the perfect game and you’re always searching for the perfect game,” Scott said. “I was a part of one in Baltimore. We sacked Ben Roethlisberger nine times and I think they had under 150 yards of offense. So we’re searching for the perfect game. We want to get some more sacks on [the opposing QB]. We wished we got to [Brady] a little bit more and made some more big plays and got some more turnovers.”

That perfect game occurred on Nov. 27, 2006, as the Ravens shut out the then-defending champion Steelers, 27-0. Scott brought the heater in the second quarter, delivering a crushing blow to Roethlisberger that knocked him out of the game for a few moments.

“That's probably the hardest I've ever been hit in my life," Big Ben said. "I didn't see the guy coming. He came clean, hit me front side, and I just kind of remember my head hitting the ground. It just knocked the wind out of me and I couldn't breathe very well."

Scott and this defense is making all of Jets Nation breathe a little easier now. Relentless, innovative and aggressive, they're just going to keep on bringing it week in and week out.

As a special bonus to our fans, newyorkjets.com will broadcast all of this week’s “Barking with Bart” on Jets TV, our Internet video component here on newyorkjets.com.

"Side note the JETS SHOULD give Fireman Ed and his partner (bro?) free season tickets and put him on the Jumbotron for every J E T S!! chant. I can still hear the noise from Sunday!"
