09/16 — It's not November, Jets fans, but it's never too early for some election results and some September polls.
The NFL and the team announced this afternoon that middle linebacker David Harris has been named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week for his 12-tackle, one-sack, one-PD performance in the 24-7 win over the Texans.
It is the first such award of an anticipated many for the Rex Ryan/Mike Pettine defense and for the Jets as a whole. It is also Harris' second in-season league award, following up on his AFC Rookie of the Month honor for December 2007.
As for the NFL's partnership awards, the Jets have two players eligible for fans to vote on from now through Friday.
QB Mark Sanchez is one of five nominees for Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week. And RB Thomas Jones is one of the three nominees for FedEx Ground NFL Player of the Week.
Sanchez recorded the third-most passing yards in NFL history for a rookie in Week 1 with 272 yards as he completed 18 of 31 passes with one touchdown and one interception for a passer rating of 84.3 in the Jets' 24-7 win at Houston. Sanchez also directed a Green & White offense that gained 462 yards and controlled the ball for almost 39 minutes.
His competitors for the honor include Titans WR Kenny Britt, Vikings WR Percy Harvin, Raiders WR Louis Murphy and Ravens tackle Michael Oher.
You can vote for Sanchez (or the rookie of your choice, of course) by clicking here.
Jones carried the ball 20 times for 107 yards and two touchdowns in the season-opening win. You can vote for him here.
T.J. is in an interesting FedEx ballot because one of the other two names on the ballot is Julius Jones, his brother on the Seahawks. Fans can also vote for Vikings RB Adrian Peterson for the "ground" half of the weekly FedEx award. Sanchez was not among the three "Air NFL Player of the Week" nominees in this area.
To vote for T.J., J.J. or A.P., click here.
We'll have more on Coach Ryan's and Sanchez's news conference comments shortly.

Tom Spicer Said:
Wed, September 16, 2009 - 3:41pm ET"I keep reading Revis should get Moss I do not think that is the way we should go about this. The Pats use the short passing game as there running game & it goes thru Welker. Revis gets him shuts him down. Lito gets Moss with help over the top by Leonard. Rhodes gets Watson/Baker shuts them out. Scott covers Faulk part of the reason we signed him was he is good in pass coverage. Lowery gets old man"
Tom Spicer Said:
Wed, September 16, 2009 - 3:46pm ET"Galloway. Its Faulk & Welker that kill us time & time again. If you told me coming into the week that Revis locks down Welker, Rhodes locks down Watson/Baker & Scott gets Faulk. Than I take my chances with Lowery on Galloway & Moss double teamed by Lito & Leonhard I would take everyday of the week & twice on Sunday. On every pass play Harris, Ellis & Jenks along with Douglas, Thomas & Gholston/"
Tom Spicer Said:
Wed, September 16, 2009 - 3:51pm ET"Westerman KILL Brady. We can do this I want Brady hit on every play punish him. When Faulk is in the game it is a pass watch the screens to Welker & Faulk thats all they do all day give Moss his room but Welker get up in his face & dare him to beat you deep. We need to run the ball all day long on them RUN OVER THEM. I want to tear Bradys heart out MAKE A STATEMENT TO THE NFL WIN THE GAME ! "

Wed, September 16, 2009 - 4:53pm ET"Randy, has anyone asked Rex about the taunting penalty on the Texans at the end of the first half? Did he decline the penalty? If not, why wasn't there one more untimed play due to the defensive personal foul? Thanks."
Randy Lange Said:
"Bump, I haven't heard Rex asked about it. From what I understand, the Jets did not decline the penalty (as was stated in the Texans' play-by-play) but rather the penalty wasn't marked off by referee Ed Hochuli's crew on the second-half kickoff."

Wed, September 16, 2009 - 4:59pm ET"Tom, that is not even rumored to be the case. Second, They will sign Leon to an extension but TJ will be let go..That is a garantee. Funny though, some good WR's available, Baske and M.Jones..6ft4 and 6ft6..Why we make zero effort on them is boggling. Revis covers Moss. Best against best..He's covered him the past 2 years and will sunday. Strictland and Lito will likely be on Welker. "
cliff Said:
Wed, September 16, 2009 - 5:05pm ET"Lito on Moss? That is mind boggling dumb. Lito can't cover me and I can't walk. Revis covers Moss, period. Lito get's the easier assignment on Galloway and how does Galloway kill us every time? This is his first year with N.E. As for Welker, Rhodes and Strictland cover him..In the end it boils down to our D-Line if they don't rush Brady like they did Shaub then we lose big. "

Wed, September 16, 2009 - 5:40pm ET"from this head coach i expect much more of the same. Harris this week, big Jenks next week, then Revis next Rhodes. I have a huge heterosexual man crush on coach Rex Ryan."
MIKE Said:
Wed, September 16, 2009 - 5:42pm ET"If anyone watched last years game Pats vs Jets, Revis covered Welker on 90% of plays and Law covered Moss. It worked really well cause Law played so physical at the line it didn't allow Moss to get down feild as quickly. Besides Welker is Brady security blanket and taking him out will shut them down. Congrats to Harris on what I hope is many more great games."
Shep Said:
Wed, September 16, 2009 - 5:47pm ET"Percy Harvin is up for the award for three catches for 36 yards and one TD? I can't see how that even comes close to a rookie QB doing what our boy Sanchize did. Harris is a monster, and he and Scott will be laying the wood to many a QB and running back this year. The Texans? REXECUTED! The Pats this Sunday? REXECUTED! Keep bringin' the pain D, and I'll see you in the big game! GO JETS!!!!"

Wed, September 16, 2009 - 5:52pm ET"Tom Spicer don't really want to step on your parade I like your insight sorry man but if we take our chances on Lowery covering Moss & or Galloway ++++++++ excuse me I have to pause for the laughter we will lose the game HELLO why do you think he didn't play Sunday he can't cover any1 without giving up TDS or 50 - 60 yard bombs Cassel wreaked havoc on him what do you think Brady will do 2 him "

Wed, September 16, 2009 - 6:22pm ET"My take V-G don't get it going early this game hes out Westy or Murell will replace him Rex did every thing in his power to get this kid going .. Praise playing time boost his convenience.Any other guy on the team would give blood for that opportunity & he still can't get it done .. Here's what I base this on V-G played 3/4 notta Westy in 2 plays Sack Cmon guys in your souls you know I'm right"

I would have to agree that, partisanship aside, it's MUCH tougher for a rookie QB to make an outstanding impression than it is for most other positions. Mark's first week performance should garner the Rookie award hands down without any disrespect to the other fine candidates!!"

Thu, September 17, 2009 - 12:19am ET"Kiss the rings, dearie? Have you see the Jets coach? He didn't get that size by turning down free meals, so if you start wiggling some little pink fingers in front of him, he just might mistake them for Vienna sausages and you'll pull back some ringless stumps! Thu, September 17, 2009 - 3:03am ET"As usual Ex will use lies and half truths to make a point, even if it is completely false. First, Lowery did play on sunday and was a factor on the interception that Schaub threw. Don't believe it check it out on the replays on NFL.com. Second, last year against the Pats in week two, Revis gave up more receptions than Lowery. The only valid point he made was that you can't leave him one on..."
Ray Said:
Thu, September 17, 2009 - 3:21am ET"..one with Galloway. JG is still a burner and would torch Lowery, or Lito for that matter, one on one. Ex you baffle me. Disliking Lowery is your prerogative, but blatantly hoping he screws up so you can come in here and tell everyone you told them so is pitiful. Rip them if they deserve it, but try being man enough to credit them if they do something good. Go Jets!"
Tom Spicer Said:
Thu, September 17, 2009 - 10:41am ET"Mike Jet Vet read what I wrote I said Lito & Leonard double Moss, Rhodes gets Baker/Watson, Revis gets Welker, Scott gets Faulk & Lowery covers Galloway. The Pats have 3 WR'S in the game at all times. "
Tom Spicer Said:
Thu, September 17, 2009 - 10:46am ET"Cliff read what I wrote I said Welker & Faulk kill us all the time. I said nothing about Galloway killing us. I also said Lito & Leonhard double Moss not Lito cover Moss 1 on 1. The Pats O goes thru the short passing game & it starts with Welker they jab you with Welker than knock you out with Moss take away the jab with Revis. "
