File Under: Mike Tannenbaum, Rex Ryan, Kevin O'Connell, Jason Davis, Matthew Mulligan, A.J. Trapasso

09/06 — A day after Jets head coach Rex Ryan hinted that more roster changes were on the way, the Green & White made a plethora of moves today, highlighted by the acquisition of QB Kevin O’Connell in a trade with Detroit and the claiming on waivers of tight end Matthew Mulligan, punter A.J. Trapasso and fullback Jason Davis.

To make room for the four new players, the Jets released running back Danny Woodhead, linebacker Brandon Renkart, punter Reggie Hodges and tackle Michael Kracalik.

"I don't really think this is a final roster, but it certainly is today," Ryan said during a Saturday conference call with reporters. "Maybe on Tuesday, there's a possibility our roster could look different. We've targeted a couple of guys who may or may not get released."

The pickup of O’Connell is intriguing, to say the least. With the season opener just a week out, the Jets appeared set with rookie Mark Sanchez at starter, Kellen Clemens backing up initially and the developing Erik Ainge playing better than ever.

But GM Mike Tannenbaum’s motto is to look under every rock, and in this case the Jets traded for a player they valued highly before the 2008 draft. O’Connell, who was selected in the third round (No. 94 overall) by the Pats, struggled during New England's '09 preseason, completing 12 of 26 passes for 108 yards with two interceptions. The 6’5”, 225-pound passer was a four-time captain at San Diego State and averaged 289.2 yards of offense his senior year for the Aztecs, passing for 3,063 yards, 15 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Mike T tonight said about O'Connell that the Jets "feel good about adding him to our team. We will move forward with four quarterbacks on our roster."

How long will the Jets carry four QBs? Or perhaps this signals another deal is coming? We’ll find out soon enough.

Mulligan, a 6’4”, 270-pound TE, played collegiately at Maine and spent time on the Dolphins' and Titans' practice squads in 2008. He had three receptions for Tennessee this preseason, including a TD catch against the Browns.

Trapasso, a rookie from Ohio State who averaged 40.5 yards on his 16 preseason punts with the Titans (four inside the 20), got a lot of attention this summer for an unbelievable play during the Hall of Fame game against the Buffalo Bills. Faking a handoff behind his back, Trapasso fooled the Bills and the nation in racing in for a ridiculous 40-yard score.

The Jets were not happy with Hodges’ consistency. It turns out Reggie's exhibition numbers were similar to Trapasso’s as he averaged 40.1 yards on 16 punts with six inside the 20.

"Certainly punter is an area where we need to get better, quite honestly, whether or not Reggie is punting," Ryan said Saturday.

Davis, a 5’10”, 242-pounder who was most recently waived by the Bears, is 25 and has appeared in six career games. His signing meant that Woodhead’s stay on the active roster was short. He impressed everyone with a 158-yard, two-TD performance in Thursday night’s preseason finale against the Eagles.

Renkart, a former walk-on ‘backer at Rutgers who racked up six sacks over his final two seasons with the Scarlet Knights, spent a lot of time last season on the Jets’ practice squad. Kracalik, a 6’8”, 335-pound offensive tackle, originally signed with the Jets in 2005 and his four NFL game appearances all came with the Baltimore Ravens.

And finally we have another move that Jets Nation will find fascinating. The Pats shipped DE Richard Seymour to the Oakland Raiders for a first-round pick in 2011. The 30-year-old Seymour is a five-time Pro Bowler and has 39 career sacks, but the Pats are attempting to get younger on defense.

"I think the Jets are going to trade to KC for Dwayne Bowe. This would be a big move and under the Radar. Bowe doesn't like it in KC is not happy there and we can use him he is a good WR and can help the WR out greatly. I don't think we are going after Bolding why would we trade a QB to the Cardinals when they have Warner and Leinart. I think Clemens and someone else to KC for Bowe."

"Bowe has talent, but I don't see a trade coming from that direction. We will find out what we have this weekend. Then there's til week 6 to make a trade. I really don't know where all this money is going to come from though. Sanchez, TJ, Leon adding new money to the cap. Excited for Sunday. Go Jets"
