File Under: Nick Mangold, Brandon Moore, offensive line, D'Brickashaw Ferguson, Rex Ryan, Bill Callahan, Alan Faneca, Damien Woody
07/17 — This is the latest in a series of nine Radar entries over the past five weeks detailing trends in the AFC East, downward tendencies each division team wants to correct for the coming season and upward strides that each team wants to continue into 2009:
Here’s a shoutout to the Jets’ starting offensive linemen, who had one of the best OL campaigns in franchise history last season and are back intact to kick their play up a notch.
Rex Ryan noted the past success and future promise at the NFL Combine in February.
“I think the strength of our football team is probably our offensive line,” Ryan said, “and that's a great thing to begin right there — four former first-round picks in the line, two Pro Bowlers and a couple of near-misses. I think that's a great way to start.”
Ryan also credited Bill Callahan, whom he has called “one of the premier offensive line coaches in the National Football League.” And Callahan trickled down the praise to his starting five of D’Brickashaw Ferguson, Alan Faneca, Nick Mangold, Brandon Moore and Damien Woody.
"Just talking with them in the off-season about their own personal performances, I feel they want to get better,” Callahan has said. “It's always a good sign when it comes from them. They’re all focused professionals who want to get better."
Where they were at was very high on some of the few measurables for O-linemen. As we’ve noted, the Jets’ 4.7 yards per carry was fifth in the NFL last season and the best season average in franchise history. The four touchdown runs of 40-plus yards combined by Thomas Jones and Leon Washington were also the best in franchise history.
The 30 sacks allowed of Brett Favre was middle of the pack in the NFL, yet the 1.88 sacks allowed per game was still in the top 15 (out of 49 seasons) in Jets and Titans annals.
Taking together, last season was only the fifth in team history that the Jets rushed for more than 4.0 yards per attempt and gave up fewer than 2.0 sacks a game. Here is the list, along with the win-loss records for that year and the next year (* denotes playoff team):
| Year | Yds/Att | Sacks/Gm | Record | Next Yr |
| 2008 | 4.7 | 1.88 | 9-7 | |
| 2001 | 4.6 | 1.19 | 10-6* | 9-7* |
| 2004 | 4.5 | 1.94 | 10-6* | 4-12 |
| 1972 | 4.4 | 1.21 | 7-7 | 4-10 |
| 1981 | 4.1 | 1.88 | 10-5-1* | 6-3* |
As we all know, rankings mean nothing without the wins to accompany them. But the Jets have the 1981 and 2001 teams as guides for the hoped-for trip to the promised land in 2009. And as Callahan said about his O-line, “Now that you've had a little taste of success, you want to go back and get more. We know we can improve on where we're at.”

Thats why i wanted them to keep Moore so they can all come back for their 2nd year as a complete unit. As always Randy great #'s. The Camp Schedule looks great and that Green/White Scrimmage should be great in the Cortland Stadium which is a great palce to watch a game. GO JETS!!!!!"

Fri, July 17, 2009 - 11:19am ET"I have been waiting for the right time to chirp about our o-line. Most NFL fans would say the Giants have the best o-line in the NFL. Wrong. KC Joyner wrote back on 6/15 in the NY Times a Lab Result from "Scientific Football 2009" a book that will be out in August. In #'s format the Jets o-line was rated higher then the Giants and may be the best in the NFL. I say they are #1 in the league.GO JETS!"

Fri, July 17, 2009 - 11:50am ET"no doubt about it our "Five Fine Fat Guys" are the key to this team, heres hoping they remain healthy and intact, if they do i predict 3 RB,s green, Jones, Washington to have 2,400yds and 26 TD's on the ground. J-E-T-S, Jets, jets, jets"

Randy Lange Said:
"Bryan, as you may already have discovered, we went live with a story on the Jets' 2009 training camp, which opens at SUNY Cortland on July 31, with a complete listing of practices for the entire camp. The story is in the rotation at the top of the home page."

"No good reason, Addage. Nevin McCaskill is now listed on the newyorkjets.com roster."

Fri, July 17, 2009 - 3:01pm ET"The line looked sick last year and I am sure they are gonna be punishing more defenses this year. One thing though is Leon getting his contract Renegotiated? Because the JETS would be dumb if they didn't give it to him. He is explosive and a key part to the Jets sucess now and in the future."

Fri, July 17, 2009 - 4:11pm ET"AMEN TO THAT BROTHER!!!! Our O-line along with Coach Callahan is where it all begins this year. Just returning all 5 alone is worth something. Only worry I have at all on offense is Cavanaugh...I don't want him ruining what we are building, I hope our HC is right about bringing him on board. As far as receivers go, they should be able to get open on single cov. Def will need to stuff the box."
scjoe Said:
Fri, July 17, 2009 - 4:43pm ET"The 4.7 YPC is nice, but the most important stat for that O Line needs to be sacks allowed. They were OK at best last year (30) They have to improve on that, especially from the LT spot. Whether or not they do that will determine how far they go in 2009."
the real t.o. Said:
Fri, July 17, 2009 - 6:06pm ET"as always ira, i couldnt agree more. the o line had to stay together as a unit as long as possible to be a staple in this league and a wall that cant be penetrated. its all about working together as one and that takes time. dont we know it? i almost cried when they said moore was leaving but thank god they got him resigned. with tj, lw and greene, we should wear the defenses down. go jets"
Fred Said:
Fri, July 17, 2009 - 8:32pm ET"I love the fact that the OL is back in tact I really think D'Brick will have his best year ever. My concern is Leon a possible/probable hold out . I read that with the expiration of the CBA he will not become an unrestricted free agent after the 2009 season. Is this correct & if so, then I guess the Jets thinking is they do not have to pay him this year, but what a huge risk "
Ira Said:
Fri, July 17, 2009 - 8:50pm ET"Cavanaugh i think was a very smart hire. Just read his bio he has plenty of experience at playing QB and being a QB coach and HC at all levels plus Rex coached with him in Balt. I think he is perfect to teach a rookie QB and bring him along. He and Schotty are great coaches for Sanchez. And after Schotty gets a HC job Cavanaugh could be the next OC. Thats why Rex hired him. "

Sat, July 18, 2009 - 12:10am ET"Well, while alot of people are unsure whether the offense will compete or having a rookie QB will limit the jets,or even some sayin the jets are still rebuilding like always.one thing is for sure Mangini being dropped is already a winning season and is just like a trip to Disney land and gettin a ring!"
Vincent Said:
Sat, July 18, 2009 - 12:32am ET"People remember that Namath was a 'great' QB, but without the O-line he had he may have been just a 'good' QB with no SB ring. This year, with the right QB and a few good sets of hands, this O-line can and will be the foundation of a march to the promised land. Just watch..."
Ira Said:
Sat, July 18, 2009 - 7:35am ET"The real T.O. Yeah i was so happy when they resigned Moore and it wouldn't have happened if Kemoeatu from the Steelers hadn't changed his mind about signing with the Jets. Moore has to be the most under the radar signing and one of the most important the Jets made all offseason. He his one of the better and most underrated OG in the league. The depth of te o-line right now is my concern."
Shep Said:
Sat, July 18, 2009 - 9:31am ET"I forget what game it was last year, but the opposition punted to us, and Leon sees that it's going to pin us deep. But the ball was near the sideline, so he stretches one foot out of bounds, then touches the ball which makes it an out of bounds punt and we get it at the 40. This guy is the best all around player on the team, and very football smart. We HAVE to keep him in green and white!"

Ira Said:
Sat, July 18, 2009 - 4:14pm ET"The Panthers have a strong o-line but its not as good as the Jets have. And the Panthers had the 1st running duo [Williams and Stewart] since 1960 to amass more than 2,000 yds and 20 TD's combined. There is no reason TJ, Leon and Greene can't put up those types of #'s also. GO JETS!!!!"
MIKE Said:
Sat, July 18, 2009 - 6:43pm ET"There is know doubt that the Jets are gonna have a better run game this year. Jones fresh off 1400 yards and Greene is a thumper and of coarse MVP Leon maybe the best change of pace back in the league. There really isn't a better time for Sanchez to play knowing he can rely on that running game and that standout OL. Picking up Faneca was the best FA move in years,"
Ira Said:
Sun, July 19, 2009 - 6:57pm ET"While i am a strong believer that your o-line has to be strong and put up #'s like Randy wrote. The Steelers last year went against the norm. Big Ben got sacked 45 times and they only ranked 23rd in the league in rushing with an avg of 105.6 yds per game. I felt those rushing #'s were more because Parker and Mendenhall missed so many games. M.Moore is the proof that in todays NFl you need 3 RB's."

Mon, July 20, 2009 - 12:59pm ET"Ira, I cringe to think that Cavanaugh will handle our offense some day. His resume is nice? Maybe the teams he coached for. As for the offensive stats for the teams he coached, you should take a closer look. Last year at Pitt. It was the offense that screwed them up, particularly the QB position. Here is to you Ira, hoping you are right."
Row Said:
Mon, July 20, 2009 - 2:33pm ET"Baker was consistantly used as a blocker. I am super proud of the O-line, Favre held the ball too long. With regards to Schotty, I'd like to see shorter snap counts. Even Favre snapped the ball with 2 seconds left on the clock. Moore was a great signing, I almost went nuts when he was released for like a day! Go Jets "
Big O Said:
Tue, July 21, 2009 - 10:42pm ET"Hey Randy, has the front office come up with a deal for Leon Washington, if not I really feel that they are beginning to lose the trust and camraderie that KEY PLAYERS felt earlier in there career. I dont believe they should give a major amount of money to players but I think what is going on with Leon Washington is absurd. He is the player you can count on in the clutch. "
Big O Said:
Tue, July 21, 2009 - 10:48pm ET"I hope that the front office has come up with a deal for Leon Washington, if not this is going to add to more bad karma for the NYJ, we traded Chris Baker, Bubba Franks, we are trying to short the main man Leon Washington, are you kidding me. That man deserves the money he has come thru in the clutch I dont know how many times. Once you break the morale its over, what do you think Randy!"
Randy Lange Said:
"Big O, I think you're entitled to your opinion."
Row Said:
Thu, July 23, 2009 - 2:31pm ET"In my opinion the front office drafted and signed Greene to find a cheap replacement for Leon. (bit more of a bruiser) He will be a free agent next year, and we will lose him. Teams are going to youth for some reason, pretending that players near 30 are worthless. When you look at the stats it's just plain not true. "
