07/04 — Steve McNair was fatally shot in Nashville, Tenn., today. He was 36 years old.
Born on Valentine's Day in 1973, "Air" McNair displayed great heart throughout his life. The three-time Pro Bowler, who shared MVP honors with Peyton Manning in 2003, was a dual threat on the field as he passed for 31,304 yards and ran for 3,590 yards during his 13-year career. Eleven of those seasons were spent with the Tennessee Titans/Houston Oilers and then he finished up with a two-year stint in Baltimore.
“Steve was special and as tough and competitive of a guy that I have ever been around," said Jets head coach Rex ryan, who served as the Ravens' defensive coordinator during McNair's B-more tenure. "As soon as we got him in Baltimore, he gave our team instant confidence and I was fortunate to be around him for two seasons. As great of a player as he was, it was more of an honor to know him as a person. My heart and prayers go out to his family.”
As football fans, we were fortunate to watch McNair. Noticed first for his ridiculous athleticism, he was a gutsy gamer who always played through injuries. Listed at 6'2" and 230 pounds, the Mount Olive, Miss., native, who attended Alcorn State and was the No. 3 overall selection of the Oilers in 1995, was country-boy tough and a natural leader.
After founding the Steve McNair Foundation back in 2001, McNair worked to help underprivileged children through programs and grants.
“I am in utter disbelief. Steve always came to work with a smile and a joy about him," said Jets LB Bart Scott, a teammate of McNair's with the Ravens. "I remember him as a dad that brought his kids to the facility and we all embraced them as our own. Not only will Steve’s family miss him, but the entire NFL family has lost a brother. His death was far too early and my thoughts and prayers are with his family.”

All he did was foolishly shot himself in the leg, but understandable carried a loaded fire arm. Probably Sean Taylor, Steve McNair (GOD bless their souls) should have been packing, they might have been alive today. My praises go out to their families. Also R.I.P. M.J. I'll miss you."

Sun, July 5, 2009 - 1:44pm ET"How could you say they shouldn't punish Burress because of something like this? These two events are unrelated. Burress was carrying an unlicensed firearm. Against the law. Period. End of story. And he was dumb enough to get shot by it even though he was carrying it. The fact that McNair was killed by gun fire does not make what Burress did any more understandable. "

Sun, July 5, 2009 - 4:22pm ET"RIP McNair For some of you - what Plaxico did was illegal, that's why he's going to jail. There are ways around that law - apply for a license to carry a concealed weapon - then he would've been facing minor charges. Plus yes, he only shot himself, but that bullet could have hit somebody else so he endangered the lives of others."

On july 4th you should BE WITH YOUR WIFE AND KIDS, and not staying at a condominium with a girl 17 years younger then you, RIP, but that is something i cant live with "

I'm not altogether opposed to firearms in some situations for protection etc. but Burris has nothing to do with this situation. You have to remember the person who did this shooting was also allowed to carry a gun. I don't want an individual like Burris on the Jets just because he happens to be athletic!!"

Thats why the Jets have to be careful when they use the word violent when they talk about their D. jet80, Nobody has mentioned Westerman but he is another option to play some LB while Pace is out."

Mon, July 6, 2009 - 11:39am ET"I always liked McNair, remember when I was the only guy who was rooting for the Titans in the superbown. Dyson fell 1 yard short. I believe he set a SB record for rushing yards. "Air" McNair will always be remembered regardless of the circumstances of his death. If you're going to conceal and carry, get the permit, don't have a record. Plax is an idiot. I think VG in a 4-3 would be beneficial!"

You really should not judge someone let alone without all of the facts. 2, If we outlaw firearms only criminals will posess them. 3, if you dont think that pro athletes should be allowed to carry firearms as protection, go win the lotto, then have the post announce it along with your name"

Mon, July 6, 2009 - 1:28pm ET"Sorry Fran but guns don't kill people...people kill people take the guns and another method will be used. The Second Amendment is what keeps this country great and will protect our freedom from any potential tyranny. A tragic loss no less."

Mon, July 6, 2009 - 2:23pm ET"Marcus, no one dragged him to this woman's house and no one dragged Plax to a night club.We make choices and sometimes there are consequences. It's not a new law that says a person can't carry a concealed weapon in NY....Plax isn't better than the rest of us....He broke the law....Don't make excuses for him after the fact. That's the essence of our problem today;avoidance of responsibility."

RIP #9"

Mon, July 6, 2009 - 5:20pm ET"the 2nd amendment entitles us to a musket, thats the kind of gun they had then, if Steve's lady friend had a musket, he probably would have been able to fend her off, what with the loading time and all, .its also hard to stick up a mom and pop store with a musket, they can kind of see you coming"
Tony B Said:
Mon, July 6, 2009 - 6:59pm ET"Sm may your soul rest in peace and may God comfort your family and give the strength to endure this tragedy. Im reading a lot of comments about him cheating on his wife. But tell me something how does anybody out there making these comments know what was going on in this mans personal life?please tell me that. You cant be that foolish to believe what you read in the papers.R.I.P. Steve Mcnair."
Purpleflash Said:
Tue, July 7, 2009 - 5:54am ET"All you guys hammering Plax. Lets get all the facts. 1) The gun he shot himself with was licensed...in another state, but not in New York. 2) And also in New, York this kind of offense usually results in a suspended sentence. 3) Wayne Stanton, that comment about the 2nd Amendment only applies to muskets is silly - No TV then either, does the the 1st amendment only apply to Newspapers?"
fran Said:
Tue, July 7, 2009 - 1:26pm ET"thank you wayne stanton for making some sense here. What makes this country great is surely not our gun laws that were created over 200 years ago under much different circumstances. Frank you can keep your muskets, how about we just eliminate the handguns which have no other purpose than to kill people quickly and at close range."
Mike Jet Vet Said:
Tue, July 7, 2009 - 2:44pm ET" Purple Flash & Tony B thinking & thoughts like that is the reason these players think it's OK ... Come on you guys really believe it's OK to bring guns loaded with the safety off no less in NY Night clubs & cheat on your wife vacationing on the Islands while she's at home watching his 4 that's right 4 kids ? There is no excuse sorry guy's it's immoral plain & simple not to mention stupid"
Jetsman Said:
Wed, July 8, 2009 - 10:07am ET"Yeah yeah the guy was tough and he battled through injuries. Sure he was a good QB and seemingly a good guy. But what he wasn't was a good father. He abandoned his 4, FOUR, children for some person 16 years younger than him! And look what happened to him. He wasn't a victim here... His children were. He was seen at his girlfriends house so much he was believed to live there. Imagine being his kid."
Tony B Said:
Wed, July 8, 2009 - 10:41am ET"Mike Jet Vet you misunderstood what I said.I never said its O.K. for anybody to cheat on their wife or condone it. My point is that before you comment on something just make sure you have all the facts. As far as plax is concerned I worked in law inforcement for more than 20 years so in no way would I condone somebody caring a gun. My thought is if you have to carry a a firearm into a establishmen"
