04/16 — And the Jets' next QB derby is rolling.
Kellen Clemens and Brett Ratliff took the snaps at the first practices of the voluntary veterans minicamp today. And without getting into too much of a snapshot mentality of the competition, KC appeared to have a good day.
Both QBs (Erik Ainge is absent due to a personal matter) had their big-play moments and both missed some open receivers. But Clemens, who took the first snaps in 7-on-7s and 11-on-11s, looked crisp on a number of passes.
Ratliff's longer balls wobbled a little more in the moderate winds. And his last throw of the final scrimmage period in the morning was underthrown and intercepted by free agent CB Tyron Brackenridge.
"The first day, it was fun out there," Ratty said. "I maybe could have done a little better, but it was fun out there. It was great to be able to get it going against the guys again and I am excited for the next practice and the rest of minicamp.
I can't get into a blow-by-blow description or a snapshot mentality — there'll be enough of that from the beats from now through September. I will say it was a good day for KC. But Clemens doesn't envision this battle ending before, say, next weekend's draft.
"It's understandable that Coach Ryan is evaluating what he's got on the team because he hasn't been here," Clemens said, "and that's the quarterback position, that's every position because it's his first draft coming up. But this thing, I would be highly surprised if we came out here in another couple hours and he said, 'OK, I've got my starter.' This is a marathon. It's not going to be a one-, two- or five-practice sprint."
Clowney's Speedy Start
One of the stars of the morning session (the afternoon practice seemed a little more low-key) was David Clowney. No less than Rex Ryan said so.
"He was impressive," the head coach said. "Everyone knows the great speed he has. And I like his confidence. He seems to be a very confident young man who enjoys playing the game. It doesn't matter if Darrelle or Lito's out there — he loves competing. I'm excited about him."
And Clowney is excited about Ryan telling his players after the morning practice that the one thing they needed to do for the p.m. practice was to "have some more fun."
"It felt good today, real good. My legs are good and my shoulder's good," said the irrepressible wideout, swinging his right shoulder, injured last preseason, with abandon. "In order for me to have more fun, I'm catching the ball. I'm going to have more fun than anybody can imagine. I get loud and I kind of get the defense mad at me. But I love competing with the corners and the other receivers."
Clowney caught one deep ball in the early session but did some impressive work on his slant routes. No surprise, said the coach.
"He's got explosive speed," Ryan said, getting into the minds of those who might be covering him, "so the first thing you worry about is 'I gotta make sure I'm high, I'm deep enough.' I think Clowney's that kind of guy" to make DBs think like that.
Add Five to the Fun
The Jets brought in five street free agents for tryouts at this minicamp: K Aaron Barret (New Mexico), TE Chris Conklin (Wingate), G Robert Felton (Arkansas), T Mike Kracalik (San Diego State) and G Eric Young (Tennessee).
Conklin presented a fairly big target (6'3", 249) to Clemens and Ratliff and made a couple of noteworthy catches down the field in the morning.

Randy Lange Said:
"English JET, I know Darrelle Revis had one of the others. But today is a new day and the morning practice is already under way. Thanks for the kudos. We do it all for you."

Kevin J Said:
Fri, April 17, 2009 - 12:22am ET"I like Clowney also, and I think that the kid from Rutgers who is rumored to be an interesting pick in the first round for us, would be a great addition to our staff. I hear all of the talk about drafting a QB, but must I remind all of you that the better QB prospects will not even be available until next year with Tebow, McCoy and the kid from OK Bradford. Patience family! "
Jimmer Said:
Fri, April 17, 2009 - 7:09am ET"A plea to the morons,,,, Will you please stop insisting we need to draft a WR! A wr in the 4-5 round is fine, but it's not a do or die deal. Since TJ thinks a contract is 1 sided, we need a rb. I know he's getting older and so are we all. But this guy was more than happy with his signing bonus. He's getting about 5M a year. If that's not enough for him, oh well. Drafting RB's seem the way to go."
Ira Said:
Fri, April 17, 2009 - 9:02am ET"Goodell and CBS must switch the Titans game to 1 pm and i believe they will. Whats even more embarrassing is that all the East Coast games that week are 1pm except for @NY and @ Buffalo. And the other 4pm starts are all on the West Coast. What was the league thinking when they put together this schedule?"
Karl Said:
Fri, April 17, 2009 - 9:08am ET"Whats the word on Danny Woodhead the rookie freeagent from last year is he practicing yet ? is he still an option for the team"
Randy Lange Said:
"Yes, Karl, Danny Woodhead is practicing as we speak. He's been getting carries behind Leon Washington. He still looks small ... and fast."
Jrez117 Said:
Fri, April 17, 2009 - 9:09am ET"Yea, I think Clowney has some potential. He may have to build into his smaller frame some more to become a predominant threat in the passing game but as a short pass playmaker he can shine."
Rick Roucoulet Said:
Fri, April 17, 2009 - 10:37am ET"Well here it is ladies & gentlemen, It cant get anymore bolder than it is today in the tabloids - A. Boldin wants out of Arizona. All signs point to a player in need of a team & a team in need of a player - LETS JUST GET IT DONE MR. T"

Fri, April 17, 2009 - 10:51am ET"Let's all keep in mind where games are won and lost. IN THE TRENCHES! Skill position guys are great, but not this year's first round. Offensive or defensive line first round is the way to go. Lots to choose from in this year's draft. Especially with the skill position guys going early."

Fri, April 17, 2009 - 1:12pm ET"Ira I wanted to stay out of this as I don't really like religious debates. But please! You have made your point already and you continue your rant in every blog now. ENOUGH!! This is not a "disgrace". The NFL owes your religion no special treatment. In fact the league is made up of 90+% Christians. This is a game and a business. They will do as they please."
russ Said:
Fri, April 17, 2009 - 1:20pm ET"Isn't there a NFL game on Christmas Day, this a bad decision. It adds up to nothing more than special treatment. Stick to the Schedule as is, or things will start to get out of hand. "

Alan Said:
Fri, April 17, 2009 - 4:00pm ET"Russ yes there is games on christmas day, but do you miss two home games back to back , because of it, and 2 games is 25% of NFL Home Game. I mean atleast make the games be scheduled away."

Fri, April 17, 2009 - 6:27pm ET"Hey guys, let's not get carried away with the religious stuff. Sports is about fun and competition and no one in any one group is going to be happy with the schedule all the time. Without a sense of humor about this stuff you're lost. Just remember what Walter Alston said when Koufax couldn't pitch in the first Series game and Drysdale blew it. (Alston to Drysdale: "Why couldn't YOU be Jewish?")"

REX is our savior"
Jonathan P Said:
Sat, April 18, 2009 - 9:34pm ET"I think we need to draft Knoshewn Moreno with our first round pick and get a second pick in the 2nd round in order to get a reciever to compliment Clowney and try to pick up Robert Ayers from Tennessee, He can learn under Shaun Ellis and it will help develop Gholston with some youthful competition, then try to get a quality O linemen for depth and also a punter."
Don Jemo Said:
Sun, April 19, 2009 - 5:06pm ET"I agree with Jonathan P in that we should draft Knowshon Moreno (if available). Force TJ to play out his contract or see if someone is willing to give up a 3rd round pick for him. Even better, how about Thomas Jones and our 2nd round pick for Boldin. AZ is a win now team that could use TJ for another run."
JC Szabo Said:
Sun, April 19, 2009 - 7:43pm ET"Rex Ryan isn't any type of savior. He is a great coach and a great person. I believe in him and what he is doing on defense. But ,we need to look at our offense. Yea, we got three young QB's, with 8 games of experience. With the loss of coles and Jones not really showing he caring, we need a good, young running back and some recievers to make this team a strong offensive and defensive team."
36 year fan Said:
Mon, April 20, 2009 - 12:21am ET"Randy just herd we're trying to convert Kareem Brown to tight end?Whats the deal ? Can he catch? Sounds like a great idea to me. Is this top secret stuff or what?"
Randy Lange Said:
"No secret, 36, it was mentioned some during the minicamp. I'm writing a story about Kareem's transition today for the site. ... By the way, did I miss a birthday? You were 35 year fan for a while if I'm not mistaken."
Anthony Said:
Mon, April 20, 2009 - 9:33am ET"I think the way Rex is going about practices and letting the players have fun is a big confidence booster. Under Mangini it was like playing for the living dead. Everything was so restricted. I think this will help the Jets in the long run and hope it does. We do need to verify our QB soon and if Jones doesn't show up a new RB could help us out greatly. Randy any word on Woodhead Practicing?"
Randy Lange Said:
"Yes, Anthony, Danny Woodhead practiced during the minicamp, getting snaps and carries with the second offense behind Leon Washington."
Jets/UtesCC Said:
Mon, April 20, 2009 - 12:50pm ET"Hey guys, i know Jones isnt really performing well so far, but i think picking up a 1st round RB like Moreno is wasting the pick, Moreno first off is over rated, second we have Washington if Jones doesnt want to "show". Washington put on 15-20 pounds last off season to, it made him a much stronger RB this year. If we really do need a RB i would suggest trying to get Donald Brown in the second."
Jets/UtesCC Said:
Mon, April 20, 2009 - 12:59pm ET"First off i think its going to be a bad pick if we get Sanchez. I really want to see us move up to a high pick and grab Crabtree around between 7-10 picks or stay where we are and pick up Hakeem Nicks. Second round RB, maybe Donald Brown if available low second i could see a trade. Third look at a QB. Fourth, TE. Fifth, LE or RE or LG or RT all need to be filled soon because of age. "
Jets/UtesCC Said:
Mon, April 20, 2009 - 1:04pm ET"As for QB, i hope there arnt many people actually wanting a high drafted QB, we have 2 right now who havent been given a shot and 1 of those has shown he can do it the preseason (Ratliff), and the other is Eric Ainge, havent seen him throw 1 ball, he has the build to be a Hall of Fame er, and he was the top QB prospect for NCAA, he had a bad o-line through Tenn. KC should get 2nd spot, behind Rat"
Jets Fan Since '64 Tom Said:
Tue, April 21, 2009 - 1:30am ET"With Jets/UtesCC's comment, we get still another thumbs-up for Ainge from someone who knows his record instead of just seen him ignored by the Jets. I'll tell ya, if that guy or Ratliff ends up on another team and becomes the next Brady or Warner or Cassell -- that is, a guy who was under the radar until he got a chance to star-- I'm gonna be mad. Same for Stuckey, Clowney, Smith, and Wright."
Jets Fan Since '64 Tom Said:
Tue, April 21, 2009 - 11:37am ET"-- and Henry, another guy who had a great college career and hasn't gotten his chance yet. And, what the hell, I'll weigh in on VG: Is it inconceivable that he might actually be good at the position he played in college? Does every defensive end really have to be 450 pounds these days? Finally, I agree with folks who say we need to draft a running back, whether the aging Jones is happy or not."
Anonymous Said:
Tue, April 21, 2009 - 2:46pm ET"I agree with jimmer.. WE DONT NEED A WIDE RECEIVER OR A TIGHTEND OR A QUARTERBACK. LET ME BE REALLY CLEAR, WE NEED A RUNNING BACK!!!!!!!!! IF KNOWSHON MORENO IS STILL ON THE BOARD THERE IS NO WAY THAT WE SHOULD PASS HIM UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! JONES IS OLD! IM DONE WITH THIS SUBJECT. WAKE UP!!! THIS IS AN OUTSTANDING TEAM! ITS TIME THAT WE WIN ANOTHER SUPER BOWL."
jetsmainiac25 Said:
Tue, April 21, 2009 - 6:18pm ET"to jets fan since 64 you may have been a fan for a long time but you clearly do not understand the concept of a 3 -4 defense gholston is way to undersized to play DE unless its in a 4-3 all he needs is to be coached up by coach ryan and he will be an elite OLB for a long time"
Kevin J Said:
Wed, April 22, 2009 - 1:23am ET"We need OL but who in the first round is worth the pick at 17? We would like another RB but not in the first round. WR is a depth position for us, we have enough to compete for the starting spots. QB is a huge question, but not an immediate requirement. 1st round is a throwaway pick for us this year. We get value in the later rounds for what we need. "
Jets Fan Since '64 Tom Said:
Wed, April 22, 2009 - 11:50am ET"Jetsmainiac25, aside from the brilliance of picking a guy so high and then changing his position -- under an ex-PR assistant head coach who never played the game (I did, did you?) -- I wonder if VG could bulk up a bit to play DE in a 4-3. Given how well the Jets D did last year, the 3-4 D (or at least ours) might soon go the way of, oh, maybe those "QB of the Future" role models Young and Vick."
Jeff Ulmer Said:
Wed, April 22, 2009 - 12:12pm ET"The Jets are in a great position to take the "Best Player" available from the board at pick 17. I also agree with Kevin J, this club is good at many positions offensivly with the exception of RB. Thomas Jones is going to give the club another outstanding year but the team should start redeveoloping at that position now. I'm excited about Clowny ability of locking in the #1 or #2 wide-out position"
Gary Avenoso Said:
Sun, April 26, 2009 - 12:05pm ET"Incredibly bad job by Mr. T, we traded a boat load of picks and players for two very mediocre football players in Sanchez and Greene. We had no depth to begin with and losing players, albeit expendable, but they were contributors to the team none the less, and now we have no picks to compensate. Final grade is a resounding F. Once again we are outdone in every way by Pats and Fins!!!"

But i still expect the Jets to get a veteran WR via a trade or FA signing. Guess the Jets like those Wingate players. Cummings is from Wingate too."
