04/16 — The Jets Radio airwaves continue to be as busy as ever. Less than 24 hours after NFL announced its 2009 schedule and just 10 days out from the NFL draft, I was joined by SportsIllustrated.com’s Don Banks on "the Drive."
The most recent article for Banks, who’s covered the NFL beat for SI.com since 2000, was on the schedule. I was curious to see what he thought of the Jets’ early slate, which appears tricky on paper.
“It’s a brutal first five games for the Jets,” he told me. “They have to go 2-0 at home against the Pats and the Titans and that’s no small feat, obviously.
"And then they’re going to have to hope to pick off at least one of the road games — at Houston where the Texans are tough and a lot of people are looking at them as a team that’s going to take the step to 10-win territory this year, at New Orleans, which is always a challenging environment with the noise and obviously with the passing game of Drew Brees, and then at Miami.
“They need to come out of there 3-2 but even at 2-3, if New York can get to 2-3 during that stretch, the schedule does turn a little easier, not drastically, but a little easier after those first five games," he added. "They might be able to set up nicely for a midseason run at that point.”
Playing in Buffalo in December isn’t easy and the Jets have avoided that situation for another year. Instead of facing Terrell Owens and the Bills in Western New York, the Green & White will move indoors at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, Canada, for what could turn into a neutral site game.
“I think it’s a break for New York,” Banks said. “It’s a somewhat static environment and obviously you can take the weather elements out of it as well. I think that’s a bonus considering anytime that you have to go to Buffalo in the second half of the season, it’s challenging.”
In his latest mock draft on SI.com, Banks has the Jets taking Florida WR Percy Harvin with the No. 17 overall selection. He views the wideout position as “a high-profile need” of the Jets but says they should have plenty of interesting options to start the second half of the opening round.
The local papers were abuzz Monday with quotes from Southern Cal QB Mark Sanchez, who indicated he had a great meeting with the Jets. Banks and I spoke at length about the Jets’ quarterback situation and he had an interesting answer when I asked him who in 10 years are we going to say was the best overall player in this ’09 class.
“I supposed if I had to put my money on one guy right now, I might go with Sanchez,” Banks said. “I think he’s got the bigger possibility of an upside. The teams I talk to that like him more than [Georgia QB Matt] Stafford seem to really think he’ll fit the pro game a little bit better and he does a few more things well. But he has such a clean slate because of only 17 collegiate starts.”

Thu, April 16, 2009 - 10:33am ET"5 - 0 in the first 5 games and Clemens is NOT a young inexperienced QB. He has 4 seasons under his belt with the G&W and is a veteran to a system that is not changing. I think we will see great things from him this year, that's if Rat does beat him out. 5 -0 in the first 5 games. Its all about confidence and this year we've got it! Eric is dead, long live Rex the king!"

Thu, April 16, 2009 - 10:52am ET"I understand what he is saying but how is playing the freakin dolphins "brutal"? Its not. Rex ate chad alive in baltimore and should surely do the same against him here. We have won in miami the last what 5 seasons? WE have more talent then the dolphins AND texans. Houston isnt a cake walk but we can get it done. We always play tennesee well and this time we have home field. Due to beat NE at home"

Saints are going NoWhere Fast,Titans?Stationary Collins will be destroyed and I love my chances with Ryan going against CHAD!"

Thu, April 16, 2009 - 11:33am ET"tough schedules are hard to predict. Last year the mid-season stretch of Pats, Bills, titans and Pats was supposed to be killer and they swept those games. as for QB, they can't afford to have #1 picks two years in row not making immediate contribution. Tthey didn't spend on Jenkins, Faneca and Pace to put the game in a rookie QB hands. give Clemons a chance. "

Thu, April 16, 2009 - 2:31pm ET"I would love it if the Jets get Sanchez this guy is a player he was the top high school prospect in the nation coming into college. He is a franchise QB just like Mike Maycock said he has the least chance out of all 3 of the "big 3 " to be a bust. If he is there at 17 & the Jets do not take this guy I will lose it."

Thu, April 16, 2009 - 2:48pm ET"To the Nay Sayers! I think the Jets will be just fine! I believe the Jets will win at Tex. based on Tex. lack of ability to study 1 of the best and most complicated D's in the league! (the same D that Chad couldn't outthink) As for "O" - The offseason isn't over! I like Sanchez at QB, but even if we go KC or BR we'd be fine! We need a WR - have 7 rounds to get 1. Gotta believe! This can be great!"

Thu, April 16, 2009 - 6:55pm ET"The first test will be stopping the Texans passing attack, we must establish a passing defense from the start. Also have to reiterate rushing for first downs, we have to run for first downs, and do it early in the season. Week 2, Brady has to be pressured regularly. We could easily lose the first four if we can't put points on the board. I'm going to say the first 4 are super key in our season!"

Thu, April 16, 2009 - 8:08pm ET"We catch both the Texans and Pats early...not a bad thing. The Texans will be good but they still have some consistancy issues. Hopefully this team can gel early and beat both teams who may not yet be in peak fom."

Sun, April 19, 2009 - 12:45pm ET"week 1- the texans dont scare me much. i believe we can shut down steve slaton easily and matt shaub will not be able to throw on our new pass d as long as we stick revis on andre johnson they have nothing else, that game will come down to if our offense can put up points, which will be the question in most games this year. Week 2- pats, if we can knock brady down and make him uncomfortable in "
Anthony Said:
Mon, April 20, 2009 - 4:29pm ET"You know what I hate hearing all this bad talk about the Jets. We might win or it will be hard. Being hard is part of the game...not giving up I think we can beat both teams... The Pats and Texans. Pats lost last year vs the Jets so whats stopping them now because their Coach Bill "Xerox" Bellicheck can read signals still. Either way we need to make sure we win."

Some how they need to be 3-2 or 2-3 and that will be a difficult task especially with a new system and QB in place. But it could be done. The Jets do get a break and like the Dolphins did in Toronto last year the Jets can win up there especially playing indoors. I don't agree about Harvin or Sanchez going to the Jets."
