File Under: Mike Tannenbaum, Darrelle Revis, Pete Kendall, Neil Schwartz, James Darling
08/04 — They're falling into place now. The first-round contracts, I mean.
WR Calvin Johnson signed with the Lions and tackle Levi Brown with the Cardinals on Thursday. As of tonight, that leaves two quarterbacks (Oakland's JaMarcus Russell, Cleveland's Brady Quinn) and two picks in the 20s (Kansas City's Dwayne Bowe, Carolina's Jon Beason) unsigned.
And of course Darrelle Revis and the Jets.
Fans and reporters have been lining up on either side in this battle and debating what the reasons must be for this stalemate between general manager Mike Tannenbaum and Neil Schwartz, Revis' agent.
From my vantage point, one thing that's NOT at work here is stubbornness — on either side. In my previous life, I was a Jets beatwriter for 13 seasons. I've seen how owner Woody Johnson's Jets operate on the contract front. Beginning with "The Four Aces" in 2000, Mike Tannenbaum had brought 10 consecutive first-round selections into training camp, including two last year in his first year as GM.
And one of the joys for me in leaving the newspaper business was not having to deal with player agents. But it's not a joy to leave behind the good agents such as Schwartz. He's a decent man who cares about his clients and works hard on their behalf.
And the Jets clearly respect him. Tannenbaum and Schwartz previously struck deals for linebacker James Darling in 2001 and, in a very competitive environment in the summer of 2004, for guard Pete Kendall after his release by Arizona.
"I've known Neil Schwartz a long time," Tannenbaum told Rich Cimini in today's Daily News. "I have a good relationship with Neil."
And in a story by Andrew Gross in today's Journal News, the GM said: "The lines of communication are open, and we're working hard for something that works best for both sides. We have a couple of issues. Based on Neil's track record and our track record, hopefully we'll find a resolution that works for both sides."
The number of years, five vs. six, has been reported to be the main sticking point in negotiations. So call the talks a hand of high-stakes Texas Hold 'Em or two business interests fighting hard for their interests. But don't call it being stubborn.
There's too much at stake for both sides for this to be boiled down to a quick, inaccurate headline word.
The first 16 selections in this year's NFL Draft can be signed to a maximum of six-year contracts. Here is a chart from espn.com of the first-round draft choices and the lengths of their contracts as of Friday afternoon.

Sun, August 5, 2007 - 4:21am EDT"According to that chart, 6 out of 14 signed players have signed 6 year deals and if revis and russell also sign 6 year deals than the market is split 50/50 on contract length. Despite popular opinion, the Jets management knows what they're doing. "

Sun, August 5, 2007 - 5:00am EDT"GET REVIS IN CAMP WITH THE 5 YEAR DEAL, THE JETS CAN'T AFFORD THIS ESPECIALLY WITH THEIR CORNERBACK ISSUES"
Starner Said:
Sun, August 5, 2007 - 5:02am EDT"Why don't they just give him a 5 year deal with a one year option? It would kinda be like a 6 year deal. The Jets would be happy Revis would be happy. Wouldn't that more sense, or is it more complicated then this?"
Ira Said:
Sun, August 5, 2007 - 7:19am EDT"The Jets have some big name players coming up for new deals. Revis will get good $. They are looking ahead at the future and they must feel to keep together the same players Revis must get a 6 yr deal. It wasn't a lock he would start from day #1. By the end of this week he will sign. "
Ira Said:
Sun, August 5, 2007 - 7:34am EDT"Mr. T is called the Cap Guru. He has been negotiating contracts for 10 years and is one of the best. He will do what he feels is best for the Jets. As for Kendall if no team needs to trade for him then he will be on the roster Sept 9th. More reps with the 1st unit. I see the ice melting. "
Jack Said:
Sun, August 5, 2007 - 8:17am EDT"I agree 100% with Drew and Mike. Stop fooling around and get these deals done. This years schedule is difficult enough with 7 games against teams with the potential to win 10+ games. PLEASE get the kid in camp, and give something back to Pete Kendall. "
naquan Said:
Sun, August 5, 2007 - 8:54am EDT"The JETS are way off base on this one. thye need to sign Revis for 5 or face this issue in that many years when he's watching his draft class get paid out tth wahzooo."
njphones Said:
Sun, August 5, 2007 - 8:58am EDT"I can understand the management thinking with the Revis situation, as more of the higher picks sign 6 year deals. What I don't get is the failure to come to terms with Pete Kendal. That needed to get done months ago."
Dunnie Said:
Sun, August 5, 2007 - 9:57am EDT"My only issue is that by letting him hold out this long and perhaps longer ... a five year deal essentially becomes a four year deal since he will be useless for 4-6 weeks unless hes in camp. If he eventually sing a 6 year deal then its really only a 5.5 year deal."
phil Said:
Sun, August 5, 2007 - 10:19am EDT"iam a die heart jet fan....mike you got to have this revis deal done. You have to stop messing around and give the kid what he wants!!!!!"
steve Said:
Sun, August 5, 2007 - 10:36am EDT"We gotta get Revis in camp NOW!!!! Give Kendall the money he wants. He did everything the Jets asked of him last year and he's a true anchor. Woody has plenty of $$$$. Let's put it in the right place and it's starts with these two guys!!"
Brian Said:
Sun, August 5, 2007 - 10:43am EDT"If Revis signs a 5 year deal, in those 5 years the Jets will have D'Brick, Mangold, Pennington, and a couple of other name talent that might have to be resigned along with Revis. That is a lot of talent and money to have to spread out. Tannibaum is looking long term. 49er's had this problem......."
Brandon Gross Said:
Sun, August 5, 2007 - 10:55am EDT"In the grand scheme of things here the Jets seem to be trying to prove two points with Revis and Kendall and in the end, the only party hurt will be the team that needs to take the field at home against the Pats Week 1. Give Kendall an extra million, Revis a 5 yr contract, and get to practicing!"
Wayne Said:
Sun, August 5, 2007 - 11:14am EDT"Kendal has given so much to the Jets, restructuring his contract and grooming Brick and Mangold. A million seems like a lot but in the sports world it's a small price to pay for stability, harmony and cohesivenes. This chess match with Revis has got to end. He needs to be in camp now. Get er done"
Rob Said:
Sun, August 5, 2007 - 11:35am EDT"Once again, you can see the difference between the JETS and a team with class and the willingness to put a quality product on the field for it's fans. Year after year the jets are an also ran with the occasional cameo appearance in the playoffs. I used to love this team, but now ? PAY YOUR PLAYERS!"
ken Said:
Sun, August 5, 2007 - 12:36pm EDT"The JETS should stick to their guns and wait for Darrelle Revis to sign for SIX years. Darrelle Revis is a ROOKIE. He will get NERVOUS went nothing happens. He hasn't palyed a down in the NFL yet, but he and his agent want to makes demands. Asante Samuel CAN makes demands, NOT Darrelle Revis."
Drew Said:
Sun, August 5, 2007 - 1:10pm EDT"I know it sounds like caving in, but the JETS need to sign Revis and lock him up for the 5 years. This puts him in camp and in a position to compete for a job and possibly start at what was a revolving door at CB last year. As for Kendall, Pete needs to own up to the contract he signed last year."
thaddeus Said:
Sun, August 5, 2007 - 1:14pm EDT"Well, does anyone here really know what's going on behind the scenes? There is a reason why they aren't paying kendall more money. They might be taking a stance with pete because if they give in to him then everyone who is unhappy with their contract will moan and groan until they get what they want"
Fosdwn Said:
Sun, August 5, 2007 - 1:38pm EDT"No way you give Revis a 5 year deal-That sets a dangerous precedent-Also if you give him 5 his contract is up the same year as Pennington & Ferguson- HE WILL SIGN_ "
Drew Said:
Sun, August 5, 2007 - 2:12pm EDT"As a die hard Jets fan, I must say that this is ridiculous. Six of the eight players picked ahead of Revis got 5-year deals. This is the trend, and the Jets should face it. Along with the very ugly treatment of Kendall, and the Jets look very small-time here. Time for Woody to pay up. "
Darrell Said:
Sun, August 5, 2007 - 2:37pm EDT"Enough is enough! GET REVIS IN CAMP!!!!!!!!"
ChicagoDrew Said:
Sun, August 5, 2007 - 3:49pm EDT"Fosdwn: "A dangerous precedent????" For what, paying people the market rate for their services. As for the traffic jam in 5 yrs - Are you kidding? 5 yrs is a lifetime in the NFL! I'd be SHOCKED if CP is still starting by then... "
Real Drew Said:
Sun, August 5, 2007 - 3:54pm EDT"Enough with other players being up the same year if Revis signs a 5 yr deal. Who knows how much longer Chad can play and what the roster will look like in 2011 or 2012. We have to win games now with an eye on the future, not the other way around. The GM might have played himself into a corner now!"
Darrell Said:
Sun, August 5, 2007 - 5:16pm EDT"Beason and Bowe have signed. That Leaves Russell, Quinn and Revis. This has officially left the realm of ridiculous and entered the sublime. Two prima-donna QBs and our middle-first-round CB. Please allow me to be the first.... SAME OLD JETS!!!!!!!!!! "
Robert Onzo Said:
Sun, August 5, 2007 - 5:32pm EDT"I personally think you've gotten to close to the situation. Like the fly on the 'Mona Lisa'. This is NOT an analytical exercize. We know how fleeting success is. We were given a gift (last years success). We don't want that gift taken away for THIS. And that's what we see is happening. Stubborn!!"
Real Vince Said:
Sun, August 5, 2007 - 6:00pm EDT"Whoever is saying the Jets are at a loss and are backed into a corner (Real Drew) is completely out of their mind! The Jets needed Revis, a great explosive player excellent on D and ST, but also about Chad, don't look now but we still got Kellen Clemens, an absolute steal. Get your facts straight."
DAMONE Said:
Sun, August 5, 2007 - 6:30pm EDT"YES AND PAY PETE KENDALL.HE IS PRETTY GOOD!! "
Jackie Said:
Sun, August 5, 2007 - 7:24pm EDT"This might be a simple solution...why not sign Revis to a 6 year deal with incentives to be met and be able to opt out of the sixth year? Isn't that often done in contract negotiations?"
James Moore Said:
Sun, August 5, 2007 - 7:43pm EDT"I don't understand why the Jets would trade up 12 spots to get a guy, then not sign him over a contract length issue. One year is not going to make or break either side. The market appears to be on Revis' side with the majority of first rounders getting 5 year deals. SIGN REVIS MIKE!!!!"
Vaughn Said:
Sun, August 5, 2007 - 8:30pm EDT"I'm disappointed in this deal. This needs to get done. The Jets in their division alone have to worry about receivers such as Moss, Evans, and Chambers. There's no way Revis is going to be matched up against these guys anytime soon if this deal goes on any longer. Get him signed... Get him playing. "
Frank Said:
Sun, August 5, 2007 - 8:46pm EDT"YES!!! Pay Pete he is one of the leaders!!!He's good and he will make the Jets better."
Big Ed Said:
Sun, August 5, 2007 - 9:10pm EDT"Actually the man over the barrell is Revis. If he holds out a year and goes back into the draft and gets a five year deal it will still be six years total. He's hurting the Jets right now because he's not in camp."
Zel Said:
Sun, August 5, 2007 - 10:05pm EDT"Greatest city in the world, greatest team in the world. PLEASE DON"T BE PETTY. WE NEED THESE GUYS !!! What free agent will come to us after this? J -E-T-S JETS-JETS-JETS"

Sun, August 5, 2007 - 10:26pm EDT"I thought Lynch signed a 5 yr deal. If this drags on to the point where it effects revis this year what is gained by a 6 yr deal?"
LT Said:
Mon, August 6, 2007 - 3:30pm EDT"They can easily sign Revis to a 5 yr deal and give him an extension and You might as well give Kendall his money because h mentors the two young guys on the line. Kendall took a pay cut last season too to make room for these new guys and we have the money to get him back for what he deserves"
rudy iacono Said:
Wed, August 8, 2007 - 3:26pm EDT"I am starting to believe in my convictions that the Tag Team of Tannenbaum and Magini are emphasizing their idealogical philosophies to the utmost extreme. The standoff regarding Kendall's & Reavis contracts are the most embarrassing Jet management stance that I have ever seen. Get the deals done! "
Harvlis Said:
Thu, August 9, 2007 - 7:04pm EDT"Why six years? If Revis lasts four seasons and turns out to be the real deal, you renegotiate with him then. Get him in camp! Kendall is a no-brainer. He protects Chad -- enough said. Why would you play with this man? Sign him or cut him and let him move on."
Pat Sullivan Said:
Fri, August 10, 2007 - 1:13pm EDT"I say jets sign revis for a 5 year deal and give kendall the money or release him, and if the jets sign revis for a 6 year deal and he doesn't pan out to be the player he was supposed to be the jets will have a bad cap. but just sign revis for a 5 year deal because you can always resign him!"
Greenbeast Said:
Sun, August 12, 2007 - 10:10pm EDT"MIKE GET THIS DEAL DONE!!!!!THE JETS NEED A BIG TIME CB ON THIS TEAM!!!! THIS HAS ALREADY BECAME A OFF THE FIELD ISSUE AND IF THIS CONTINUES IT'S GOING TO BE ON THE FIELD ISSUE!!!!!!!!!! Oh and if you can work it out get DE S.Rice. Sincerely your greatest fan, The GreenBeast."
Laurent Said:
Mon, August 13, 2007 - 10:43am EDT"Revis is betting that he will be so good after 5 years that he can then ask for big money, but he hasn't accomplished a thing, not even played one down in the NFL. The Jets are offering him millions of guaranteed dollars, allowing this talented young man financial security for the rest of his life. "
gary Said:
Tue, August 21, 2007 - 4:36pm EDT"I Don't understand why no one has had any kind of coversations with Pete Kendall. I think this is a huge distraction to him and the team. Solidify a position speak with him and he stays or goes at least you know where you stand. He is a great player he is a solid veteran who does offer leadership"

Sat, August 4, 2007 - 10:38pm EDT"I just do not agree with the Jets on this one. The market is a 5yr deal. Revis would be a fool to sign a 6yr deal now. I think the Jets have to put a couple of SB titles in the case before making such unlikely demands. Langer....didn't Revis's uncle sit out a full year over a contract?? "
