For the Gaffneys, Like Father, Like Son

File Under: Laveranues Coles, Derrick Gaffney, Florida Jacksonville, Jabar Lito Sheppard

Jabar Gaffney and his father, Derrick Gaffney, have a unique relationship. It's one that doesn't require Dad, the former Jets wide receiver, to be on site to watch his son, the current New England WR, play in Super Bowl XLII on Sunday.

"All the family wanted to come to the game, so he thought he would give up his ticket," Jabar said from the Patriots' Kierland, Ariz., hotel this week. "He set an … More

Holovak Remembered During SB Week

File Under: Bill Belichick, Tom Coughlin, Mike Holovak, Walt Michaels

Of the many New York-New England ties mentioned this week, the saddest one had to do with the passing of Mike Holovak.

Both Super Bowl head coaches, Tom Coughlin and Bill Belichick, were asked about Holovak, who died Sunday at the age of 88, and both had memories — Coughlin because he, like Holovak, was a head coach at Boston College, Belichick because he is, as Holovak was, a highly successful … More

McKenzie Tells Jets to Keep the Faith

File Under: Chad Pennington, Randy Moss, Kareem McKenzie, Ahmad Bradshaw, Marshall University

Kareem McKenzie looked the same as he did in his four Jets seasons. Dapper, even though he was wearing his game jersey at the Giants' Super Bowl media session. Studious, with his half-frame glasses and the book he brought with him to his interview riser. Directorial, as the videocamera he also brought with him suggested.

"Part of my focus this week is to make sure I take it all in," McKenzie said… More

Want to Win? Kyle Brady Says 'I Do'

File Under: Thomas Jones, Leon Washington, Bill Parcells, Danny Ware, Kyle Brady, Tom Coughlin, Rich Kotite

Some writers complain about Super Bowl Media Days, but as Laveranues Coles might say, "It is what it is." You just have to laugh at some of the things that take place on the floor of the stadium five days before the NFL crowns each year's champion.

Today's event was marked for better or worse by two women from Mexico's TV Azteca who appeared to be ready to marry any football player on the floor o… More

Plax Predicts; Seymour: 'Talk Is Cheap'

File Under: Eli Manning, Richard Seymour, Osi Umenyiora, Plaxico Burress, Super Bowl XLII, Media Day

Super Bowl XLII Media Day has come and gone, and as always it was a zoo. A pleasant zoo, with lots of late-night television shows represented and Mexican TV stunts involving puppets and women proposing marriage to almost every Giant and Patriot.

But if you listen to enough of the players and read between the lines, usually you can tease out a storyline about the mindsets of the teams as they head… More
